Scalloping along one edge, typically the inner edge, tends to happen as a result of problems deeper in the suspension. Bad wheel bearings can cause edge scalloping, but so can bad ball joints, bad steering or sway-bar end links, damage to the steering linkage or control arm, and severely damaged suspension bushings. This kind of wear happens because something in the suspension is bouncing or vibrating when that wheel is compressed during cornering. Edge scalloping could be a sign of impending disaster, so have it checked out immediately.

A good mechanic, like a good doctor, is first and foremost a diagnostician -- a person who knows where to look for problem signs, and how to recognize them for what they are. Tire wear patterns can offer an amazing degree of insight into suspension and chassis problems, provided you know how to read the signs.

Scalloping can happen along the center of the tire's tread, or along one side. If it occurs down the middle of the tread, the cause usually goes back to the tire or suspension on that wheel regularly bouncing as it goes down the road. Under-inflated tires are prone to center-tread scalloping, particularly if they're very tall or low-quality tires. Underinflation tends to cause lots of small scallops. The same is true of unbalanced wheels and bad wheel bearings, but these scallops tend to be deeper, sharper and less tapered on either side. Larger, broader scallops down the center are more often the result of bad shock absorbers. [links]

Tire cupping -- aka "scalloping" -- is a kind of tire wear consisting of regular divots or scoops carved out of the tire's tread. Depending on the location of the cupping, you may feel it as a vibration that increases with vehicle speed before you start seeing scoops of flat spots appear on the tire. The sensation is not unlike that of having an unbalanced wheel or tire -- which is ironic, since unbalanced wheels and tires are one possible cause. more

Misaligned tires may cause a vehicle to drift to the left or right or behave unpredictably when turning. Tire cupping can be the result of misaligned and/or unbalanced tires. If you notice any of these conditions when driving, have your vehicle’s tires and alignment checked by a qualified technician. [links]

Cupped tires tend to be quite noisy, especially at highway speeds. If you experience increasing tire noise over time, be sure to have them inspected by a professional. here

Vibrating felt through the steering wheel means the front wheels may be unbalanced, and vibrating felt through the seat means the back wheels could be unbalanced. If vibrating is felt through both the seat and steering wheel, it is crucial to have tires checked for imbalances and possible cupping. here

Generally, trailer tires don’t wear evenly: It’s just physics. When a tandem axle trailer with four tires takes a tight turn, the inside tires will “slide” a bit rather than roll, because they have significantly less distance to travel. Over time, this scuffs off tiny parts of the tread, creating odd wear patterns. here

Whether you’re towing a camper, a boat or a cargo trailer, whatever’s attached to your hitch needs the same attention your vehicle gets. If you’ve noticed uneven tire wear, your trailer is bouncing or you’re not sure what type of tire is best, here’s a quick FAQ.

Non-trailer tires have lots of voids and deeper grooves on the tread to evacuate water quickly for better traction. The ribs are often jagged and separated by grooves. more

Identifying Trailer Tire Tread Wear and its Causes

dmytrij

When it comes to trailers, the same argument can be made: trailer tires are the most important part of the trailer itself because they allow you to safely and effectively transport your cargo from Point A to Point B. And, like the tires on your car, truck or SUV, they’re subject to wear and tear as you ramble down the road. It’s important to identify these types of tread wear to prevent costly blowouts and damage to your trailer while on the road:

Before you hitch up your trailer for another adventure, make sure to check the condition of your tires and treads. Identifying the common types of trailer tire wear above can be the difference between getting to your destination safely and ending up on the side of the road, waiting for a tow! here
