The featured yacht changes nearly every season and is often available for charter (even by us regular folk. well, rich regular folk), starting in the low six figures (plus expenses), for groups of up to 12 and a crew of nine or more. To get onboard one of these multimillion-dollar vessels, would-be guests turn to a charter broker, a person whose job it is to pair each guest with the right yacht. Lauren Littlejohn, now a charter broker for Ocean Independence, grew up in a yachting family (her father was a captain of a 102-foot yacht that cruised the Great Lakes and Bahamas) and spoke with us about what actually happens below deck.

While Below Deck hasn't led to an increase in the number of charters, it may have increased the number of crew applications. “There seem to be fewer numbers of experienced crew, and most seem to be making a shorter career out of yachting,” says Littlejohn. “I believe that the poor behavior being so emphasized on TV has possibly tightened up some of the behaviors nowadays; that may also come from captains tightening up their onboard rules.” here

Crewmembers are working nearly 24 hours a day during a charter, then sleeping just feet apart, so it’s no surprise that tensions can run high. Despite the dramatic footage of the show's chief stewardess storming off down the dock in season seven, professionals know they’re agreeing to long hours and sometimes-demanding guests. The show's captain, Capt. Lee Rosbach, prefers a deckhand or stewardess to work through the end of a charter. If something goes very wrong mid-trip, guests are unlikely to spot the now-unemployed crewmember again, thanks to staff-only hallways, stairwells, and accommodations. more

Gang says there may have been a handful of yachts that turned her down because they recognised her from the show, but she’s had no trouble finding work among her extensive network. And speaking to BOAT International from his job as mate on a 35 metre, Inia says his Below Deck stint hasn’t affected his career at all.

The prevailing sentiment in the early years was that anyone who appeared on the show would never work in yachting again. Thankfully that has been proven wrong, with many cast members returning to charter work.

So, while some in the industry – like the captain of a superyacht who binge-watched the entire franchise during Covid-19 lockdown – will never accept the show as a representation of yachting, that might be beside the point. “It’s supposed to be entertainment, take your mind off the trials and tribulations of your day and show you some place maybe you haven’t been before,” says Captain Lee, the show’s most famous face.

There is still some stigma around the show, but the tide is turning. “It has become a talking point for people in the industry instead of ‘We don’t want to acknowledge it exists,’” says Gang.

How real is this reality? Very, say crew members who’ve been involved with the show. “Anybody who tells you none of those things happen on yachts is lying,” says Gang. “There are always love triangles, insubordination, people getting too drunk, people not doing what they’re supposed to be doing, crazy charter guests – all of those things are real… Just not all on the same boat in the same six-week period.”

As a treat for the guests, Allman once orchestrated a surprise visit from Kate Chastain, the chief stewardess who rose to fame over six seasons. “The stories she told about how hard they work during the shoot amazed me. They still have to turn the boat around, do the laundry, provision, etc, as well as sitting for interviews and dodging camera crews,” she says. “There is no ‘extra’ stew making sure all the grunt work gets done while the stars are being filmed. If I work 16 hours a day, they must be doing so much more than that. We as a crew should have a lot more respect for how hard they are working.”

Throughout the course of the show, the yachts have played an important role on Below Deck.

For the third time in Below Deck history, charter yacht BG (known as VALOR) was back as the Season 7 superyacht. The yacht's real name is BG, and she was built in 1990 by the world's most revered shipbuilder Feadship. Since then, she has undergone many interiors refreshes to keep her in tip-top condition.
