Tail lamps for cars, trucks or motorcycles can be easily checked for proper operation using a standard multimeter. These tools allow you to diagnose problems with vehicle electrical systems by determining where the problem with your lights may be at. Rather than just checking the terminals inside the tail lamp, it's a good idea to remove the tail light housing and check the harness, as well. This will let you determine how far back in your electrical system the problem may be located.

Unplug the light bulb from the light socket and inspect the filament for damage. If the coiled metal filament inside the bulb is broken, there is no further need to test the tail light. A new light bulb will be sufficient for the repair. more

Ask an assistant to hold down the brake pedal on the vehicle to activate the electrical system. If the vehicle has integrated turn signal-tail lights, you can set the emergency flashers or turn on the car's ignition and headlights. On motorcycles, the accessory power must be turned on at the ignition key and the foot brake held down to activate the light. here

The controller of a trailer’s electrical brake system is a device that feeds the current to your electric brakes. When the brake pedal in your tow vehicle is being pressed, the electromagnets in the brakes themselves get activated and your trailer stops.
Frayed or damaged wiring is also a big issue, due to the wire placement within the axle itself. If you get an indication on the brake controller screen “Output Shorted”, start looking at wiring problems within your axle:
Whether you are towing a heavy load or driving up and down dangerous mountain roads, you really need to have good, reliable brakes. If you suspect some kind of brake problem, clear it up RIGHT AWAY, before you get on the road and expect them to work the way they are supposed to!

Once you have the leads connected to the multimeter you can then begin to test the wall socket. To do so you need to insert the leads into the socket itself. Usually when you work around the electrical sockets you want to turn the power off so you do not cause yourself an injury. However, to test the current you need to keep the power on. Keep this in mind as you are inserting the leads into the socket. It is important to get the right lead into the right slot. more

Once you have the leads in place you must check the electronic multimeter to see what the reading is. With a standard household current you should either have a reading of 110 VAC or 120 VAC. If you do not see a reading like this then you know that there will be a problem with the outlet. Remove the black lead from the slot and place it in the oval slot in the center of the socket. If you do not have a reading, then you will a problem with the circuit. here

When you are going to use the electronic multimeter to test the electrical sockets in your home you are going to want to use the VAC setting. Turn on the multimeter device and then turn the dial to the appropriate VAC setting. If your particular multimeter does not have the VAC setting, it may just read "Volts".

There are 2 different wires that you will be using to test the electrical socket in your home. One is colored red and should be connected to the "volts" input on the multimeter. This may have a red ring around it. There is also a black wire that will be connected to the "com" input on the device. This may have a black ring to distinguish it as the right one.
