The ABYC defines “enclosed accommodations” as “one contiguous space, surrounded by permanent structure, that contains all of the following: a) designated sleeping accommodations; b) a galley area with sink; and c) a head compartment.” here

Even if your boat doesn’t fall under the above definition, if there’s an enclosed area you spend time in, we recommend installing a CO detector. Fireboy-Xintex (www.fireboy-xintex.com), among others, sells sophisticated carbon monoxide detectors for marine use. They cost much less than a funeral. If you cook or heat with LPG,consider installing a propane detector, too. [links]

Most important, given the consequences of a ham-handed installation of a cabin heater, including, but not limited to, fire and asphyxiation, the task of adding a heater to your boat is not a do-it-yourself job for most. Hire an expert who knows what he’s doing, who can correctly engineer and install the fuel supply and exhaust chimney, and who will adhere to the applicable ABYC requirements. Your pride ’n’ joy was probably built to ABYC standards—keep it that way. (See New Rule for CO Detectors for news of changes in ABYC rules.) [links]

One Btu—British thermal unit—is the energy needed to heat, or cool, one pound of water by one degree Fahrenheit at one atmosphere of pressure. There’s an oft-quoted formula for estimating how many Btus per hour you need to warm a room or a cabin: Multiply the volume of the space by a constant—14 if it’s well-insulated, 18 for poor insulation, or somewhere in between, depending upon your talent for guestimation. Using this formula, a 10-foot-wide by 12-foot-long by 6.5-foot-high saloon, well-insulated (constant = 14) needs 10,920 Btus per hour of heat. more

Same deal with diesel: If you have tanks full of the stuff, adding the plumbing to fuel the heater, or to fill a small day tank to gravity-feed oil to the fireplace isn’t that big a deal. (Or you can add the tank with a separate deck fill, like some outboard-boat builders do to fuel diesel generators in their gasoline-powered boats.) “The diesel heater install is the most expensive and difficult,” says Parry. “The chimney parts, wall protection, fuel pump, and fuel lines are all sold separately.” (The Newport Diesel heater alone sells for $1,063.)

Rupert Holmes helps you to choose the best heating system for your yacht or power boat and runs through how to install it.

While we tend to shun solid fuel at home, there are situations in which this is the easiest and most inexpensive method of providing boat heating, especially for occasional use. The next step up from a fan heater is a bulkhead mounted charcoal heater. While these aren’t as convenient to use as a diesel fired marine central heating system, they’re a fraction of the price, can be installed in a few hours and require little maintenance. Expect an up-front cost saving of at least one third compared to the simplest warm air diesel heaters. more

In a road vehicle the unit is typically mounted outside of any accommodation spaces. However, even if the unit is located in an engine room or cockpit locker, on many yachts it will not be fully sealed from the living accommodation. This means that the exhaust must be gas tight and must vent overboard. In addition, the air intake for the heating air must not be in the same compartment as the exhaust. This precaution means that, in the event of an exhaust leak, fumes, including deadly carbon monoxide, won’t be pumped around the boat’s interior

It’s also a good option if you are looking to conserve energy since it comes with a CFC- free form insolation. more

The heater’s casing is made from high-quality aluminum that makes it resistant to corrosion.

There are many water heaters in the market today, some of which have a modern touch while others are still in the bulky traditional designs.
