I am having trouble setting the gear control in the corect position to start my port engine on my 99 4788. Can't seem to find any info about the Hynautic Neutral Safety Switch. Can any one tel me where it is or anything about it. Has any one had similar problems.

Are you planning on being out this coming Aust Day weekend?? We'll be at Canaipa with an RQ group on Sat thru Sun am, then down to Jumpinpin.

The cylinder will likely be capable of some "over-travel" in either direction (compared to the transmission selector travel).

It still sounds like an issue with the neutral safety switch. Could there be a problem with a ground or in the wiring? Is the problem intermittent?

Had the same issue on my 06 f250 6.0l .The root cause was the o-rongs on stand pipes and dummy plugs(located inside of valve covers)were worn causing too low of oil pressure to fire the injectors so truck will not start back up after being shut off till oil can get cool and thicken up to cause higher oil pressure to fire the injectors. Eventually it’s going to get to where it will not start at all if not fixed. here

The replacement cost of a neutral safety switch is anywhere from $95 to $150. The parts cost will be around $50 while the labor costs will be between $45 and $100. more

In a standard transmission it should be located near the clutch pedal assembly. On an auto, it’s usually near the shift lever. If you google your make and model, you will probably find a helpful adjustment video on YouTube, or a walkthrough in a forum. [links]

Sometimes the engine might crank in park but not in neutral. This is another possible symptom of a neutral safety switch problem.

However, automatic transmission systems are built with a safety component which prevents you from starting the engine if the gear is set to another gear other than Neutral or Park. This component is the neutral safety switch.

I will hopefully see your question answered. I have pulled the entire panel while on the water, found nothing wrong, put it back together and worked fine for 3 months (12-14 days on the water).

We seem to have a faulty neutral safety switch and it is preventing us from being able to start the motor with the key. I have ran a temporary wire from the key right to the solenoid, bypassing the neutral safety switch and harness connector, and it cranks no problem. the Ciera has a Quicksilver 3000 throttle controller. We took the controller off but the part with the switch and levers is in between the panel and the hull. we can't figure out how to remove the panel to look at the switch. I have attached a picture of the panel and of the throttle controller stuck in between the panel and the hull. I have read there are slits in the vinyl where you can access screws holding the panel on but we can't find any.

I just did this on my 2452tochange the shift cable.
The boat has a access from the rear of the control box thru the starboard seat pedestal.
The side mount merc 3000 has a plate which can be opened on the outside. Remove the screw holding the shift lever to the box. pull the shift lever out. The push button for throttle only must be pressed an the shift lever at 11 o'clock before doing this.
Behind the plate you will see 6 bolts going thru. Three outer ones hold the box to the side panel, other three inner ones hold the box to the mounting plate, called a "bezel" in the book. Remove these and the biox is free and can be lowered to work on it. Note: the wiring to the control handle trip and tilt switches have a plug to free the box.
Mow the switch is in plain view. With a friend working the rear of the side panel, and me in the wheelhouse, this took about a half hour. And, I never had done this before. here
