75W-90 gear oil is a lubricant designed for manual transmissions, transfer cases, and differentials. This viscosity is ideal for colder climates, while still maintaining adequate high-temperature viscosity. However, if you use your vehicle for hauling, towing, or other stressful driving situations during the summer, 75W-140 gear oil may provide extra high-temperature protection. If you notice clunking or grinding from under your vehicle, check the condition of your gear oil. If it is low, or if the gear oil itself is dark and smells burned, consider changing your gear oil. Always consult your vehicle's owner manual for the manufacturer-recommended gear oil weight. At O’Reilly Auto Parts, we carry gear oil and limited slip additives for most vehicles.

Mobil Delvac Syn Gear 75W90 is a fully synthetic fluid created to meet high-performance requirements. This synthetic gear oil is intended for usage in the transmissions with a high load, which work under extreme pressure and shock loads. It also works with the applications that require using oils with relatively high viscosity and superb bearing capacity. Mobil Delvac Syn Gear 75W90 contains a synthetic base oil and modern type of additives that make it much more effective compared to mineral base oils. When using Mobil Delvac Syn Gear 75W90, gear shifting becomes smoother right away. more

It’s necessary to take decisive actions as soon as possible if you hear strange sounds, switching gears, or notice oil leaking from under the gearbox. Also, the machine may produce increased vibration. Well-functioning differential doesn’t present any of these signs. [links]

Mobil 1 Synthetic Gear Lube – 75W90 is a high-performance universal synthetic gear oil, the viscosity grade of which meets the requirements of the modern passenger car transmissions that work in all operating conditions, including gears with locking differentials. Mobil 1 Synthetic Gear Lube – 75W90 secures work in very high and low temperatures and ensures optimal viscosity-temperature properties. Mobil 1 is acknowledged to be one of the best gear oil for differential. However, it is not very suitable for limited-slip vehicles because it does not have enough limited-slip friction modifier. more

In order to help select the oil for differential correctly, the best gear oils are gathered and presented on the list. They all perfectly fit differential, however, each one has its peculiarities, which should be considered.

The measure of the thickness of a liquid is called viscosity. Though there are several different measurements for viscosity, the one standard with gear and other automotive oil is the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) weight classification. The larger the SAE grade number the more viscous the oil. more

The SAE grading system indicates oil viscosity in simple numbers ranging from the thin oil (10) to the very thick oil (140 or above). Heavier weight, or higher grade oil is more viscous and therefore thicker as it flows between the gears. Light grade oil is ideal for small, fast, polished gears under a light load. Heavy grade oil is suited for large, slow, rough gears under a heavy load. Check your manufacture's specifications for the gear grade needed in your equipment. [links]

Gear oil is used as a lubricant between the moving parts of a gear system so that the gears mesh and turn smoothly. Depending on the type of gears and the operation conditions the gear oil will need to possess different physical properties to adequately lubricate and protect the gears. more

Viscosity is affected by temperature. SAE viscosity ratings are given for the oil as measured at 212 degrees Fahrenheit. As oil gets hotter it becomes less viscous, as it gets cooler it becomes more viscous. Imagine putting honey in the microwave; at high temperature it flows more quickly. For cold weather oil the SAE has a "W" certification for oil that is tested at 32 degrees Fahrenheit. The grade will be indicated with a number followed by the letter "W" to indicate winter viscosity.

When you are choosing a transmission or gear oil you might be wondering what GL-4 and GL-5 mean and what the differences are between these two classifications. Choosing the right classification is extremely important since they both have different properties and wrongful use could lead to serious damage to your vehicle.

The main difference between GL-4 and GL-5 gear oils is the amount of EP additives. Sulphur/Phosphorus containing products are used as EP-additive. This additive has the purpose to prevent the occurrence of micro-welds on the gear flanks at the local high temperatures which prevail in EP circumstances (temperatures well in excess of 800℃!) GL-5 has roughly twice the amount of EP additives compared to GL-4, which is why it is often used in high-pressure circumstances such as in a front axle and rear axle differential.
