Any grease of the same consistency (NLGI 2) which is water resistant should do the job. The main thing is to keep grease in the bearing cavity and water out. We prefer a hand held jiffy lube since it does not create high pressure. If a cartridge type lever gun is used, it should be pumped gently! Excessive pressure will invert the rubber seal lips and seals will no longer keep water out.

And finally; what of white lithium grease? Is this OK for marine use in any way?

There are also two grease nipples on the lower units of my Mariner 40? Is it OK to use straight ahead marine grease for these?

Always wear protective safety glasses and gloves when using grease guns, as the lubricant will be highly pressurised [links]

Regardless of the grease gun cartridge size, the process of how to replace a cartridge will typically involve the following key steps: [links]

As well as having a grip and a nozzle or ‘barrel’ of sorts, grease guns are typically operated via a lever that may somewhat resemble a large ‘trigger’. In certain newer or more automated models, this lever may be significantly smaller than in more traditional manually operated formats, giving rise to terms like ‘pistol style’ grease pumps. more

Hand pump grease guns - This type features a pressurised pump handle or piston as part of the tool, which is primed before use to create a build-up of pressure, and subsequently released via a trigger mechanism to force the lubricant through the fitting

There are several common formats for grease fittings, with the most common being a standard-sized convex shape that fits snugly against the typical concave end of a grease gun nozzle. This combination allows the grease gun to be attached easily from various angles and still make an air-tight connection, meaning fewer instances of lubricant oozing out around the outsides of the grease nipple rather than being forced into the voids as intended. here

Once your grease gun has been fitted with a new lubricator cartridge, the precise method for using it will, of course, depend largely on which type of tool you have. In the case of most manual grease guns, it will be a simple process of attaching the nozzle or tip to a grease fitting on the bearing you want to lubricate and applying steady pressure until you’ve dispensed the appropriate amount of grease into the bearing. For pneumatic grease guns, you will need to get them set up correctly with an appropriate compressor or generator first. [links]

My steering cylinder has a grease nipple on the port side of the cylinder. However, on the starboard side, securing the ground strap, there is what sure looks like a grease nipple that my grease gun attaches to as expected. But there is no hole in the nipple. It's not clogged, I picked at it with an awl and it is filled with metal. I'm trying to figure out if I got a bad grease nipple that wasn't machined correctly, or if that fitting on the starboard side really isn't supposed to be a grease nipple.

I have a crazy question I just ran into winterizing my 2018 for the first time. Hoping that somebody else that has the SeaStar hydraulic steering can take a quick look at theirs and give me an assist, as I would sure hate to have to tow the boat back to the dealer to get an answer on this one. It's certainly easy enough to replace the nipple. but I don't want to shoot grease into some place that it was not intended.
