RPM Information: 5000
Your engine's RPM range is important in choosing the right propeller for a given application. For example, if you look at your tachometer at top speed and it is not within the engine's RPM range then that is generally not good. You want your RPM's to be within the proper range while at wide open throttle (WOT). Be sure to do your testing under your normal boating conditions and with a good propeller (not bent, cracked, or excessively chipped).

Wondering
"Where-'n-'Ell"
to get great parts for your outboard?

Here is a listing of common color codes for Yamaha outboard motors. There is an industry-standard set of wire codes in general use by most manufacturers except Yamaha. Colors listed here may vary with year & model but in general should be a good guide when tracing Yamaha wiring troubles. [links]

Aquasport and Kavika . seems likely that I'm going to have to pull the heads. I was wondering how difficult this job would be?

When you say "pulling the head" I'm assuming you mean the Water Jacket Covers. I'm using both the Clymer and Yamaha Service Manuals and the Clymer manual lists the outer most part (where the Thermostat is installed) as the Water Jacket Cover. Removing and cleaning that seems fairly straight forward but if I have to go further than that I think it's time to call a mechanic.

Is that what you guys are talking about or did you remove everything down to the Block?

Assuming that it's only the water jacket that needs to be removed . how did you clean them?

your 6Y5 tach will still work with the F150:
rpm, trim, warning indicators for overheat & low oil pressure.

If so, however, there is one wrinkle:
the CL Speed gauge does not use the rubber tube from the engine "directly"
the way the 6Y5 does -
so it needs either a $150 "sensor" at the engine to connect to the speed tube
or get speed from a GPS unit.

I believe my tach and fuel gauges are 6Y5 generation, I know these don't have the command link capabilities. Would the 6y5 tach work with less functionality? Or will it not work at all?

If it is completely necessary to upgrade to the 6Y8 series, can I only the Tach? I fell like the speedometer and fuel readings are all separate from the engine harness?
