Start wiping! You will be amazed how easily that scum wipes away. Keep turning your towel as needed to a clean section that is still moist to be as effective as possible. It’s totally OK to let it sit on tough areas for a while. I’ve worked on boats that had it so bad it was about an eighth of an inch thick off the boat. It took some scrubbing, but it all came off. After it dries you will see what looks like yellow staining on your topside or bottom that might look alarming, but don’t worry. Grab your spray bottle and you can literally watch it disappear when you spray it. It’s actually pretty cool. I recommend a spray bottle if you have bottom paint because you can wipe up the water/acid before too much hits your bottom paint and causes a reaction… especially if you use something high in metal like VC17 which is copper. You will need to wipe a few times until the acid is all gone and the yellow goes away…but again, you’ll see it just disappear every time you spray it again. If your hull is bare, grab that hose and rinse it, baby!

So what are those stains at the waterline or on the hull of your boat? I sail and boat on lakes in the Midwest and it is ever so common around here. I have to do this process every spring before I put my boat back in the lake. When your boat stays in the water for an extended period, tiny microscopic critters like to live and die on your boat. They form these tannin stains and because they are of natural elements, they are naturally very tough and tough to clean! If you have anti-fouling paint on your hull, you will likely only have at and just above your waterline. But if you have a bare gelcoat bottom, the entire thing could be stained and without this method, you will be quite frustrated and probably worn out trying everything else under the sun to get it out. Ask me how I know. here

Yes, there is a safe (and right) way to use muriatic acid to clean pontoon boats. Following these steps carefully should let you achieve that stainless look and feel you’re hoping for without causing any serious damage to your boat.

There’s really no golden ratio here, but a 1:1 measure might be a little on the strong side. Consider dialling it down to 1:4 acid to water first and then adjust your ratio depending on the outcomes you get out of the cleaning process.

There aren’t infinite ways to clean an aluminum trailer, but there are some tips that keep your trailer looking well-maintained. Frequent washing and polishing enhance your aluminum trailer’s appearance, but it adds resale value if you no longer require one or want to purchase a new one.

Don’t mistake aluminum for stainless steel, either. They may look similar in appearance, but aluminum is just as sturdy while being lighter in weight.

Too many boat owners see aluminum as just another material on their boat. They wash it with soap, dry it off, and call it a day. But if you want to maximize the life of your aluminum boat—and keep your aluminum’s trademark shine—just use this simple guide to cleaning aluminum boats.

This is an easy fix, but if you plan on cleaning your entire boat on a hot day, you might want to temporarily cover your aluminum with a tarp or even some towels just to get it out of the sun.
