See full version: What does a bad transom sound like

After purchase I noticed it had a leak in the engine compartment. Not fast, but enough to bug me, and honestly I wasn't terribly concerned as old I/O boats are notorious for leaking (I've since learned that they should never leak. If they do, something is wrong, and your boat is sinking). I brought it in and had the typical bellows replacement work done and had the gimble bearing and u-joints replaced at the same time; that's just good maintenance, anyway. I put it back in the water, and nothing had changed - still leaked water into the bilge, and the more I used the boat, the worse the leak got. I knew the engine had to come out for further inspection.

I went home with the boat and started digging in the wet area with a screwdriver and the wood came out in bits. Bad sign. Interestingly enough, I couldn't "hear" this rot from the outside like most people suggest (knock on the transom and listen for different sound in specific areas). Either way, I now knew the transom had to come out. more

I pulled the motor using a friend's A-frame hoist and left the drive on and headed to the water again. I hoisted the drive into the "up" position with ropes to keep it from dragging on the ground. I left the boat tied to the trailer and backed it into the water until the entire outside drive was covered in water, then climbed into the boat to find the leak. Lo and behold, I watched as water started to seep in around the lower section of the drive hole. I stuck my finger down into the wood and. found mush.

I’m not a big fan of loud music when I’m cruising on my boat. While I love music, I think it’s best to keep it at a reasonable sound level rather than blasting tunes for everyone in the marina or anchorage to hear. And there’s another reason to turn the volume down: Music can distract you from other noises on board, including those in the engine room. A builder told me a sad tale about a skipper who chose to run a boat from the flybridge while wearing headphones. He wanted to listen to his favorite bands rather than the throb of the machinery underfoot. It wasn’t until the tachs started fluttering that the captain pulled off the headset, only to hear the smoke alarms ringing. I don’t think he was listening to “Light My Fire” at the time, but even so, the boat’s owner fired the guy when he found out what he’d done.

Boats are noisy, and some sounds are good. On one delivery run I made from New Jersey to Florida, I encountered an electrical problem at a marina; the shore power couldn’t keep the bait freezer and other refrigeration running. I started up the generator, all the while thinking about the several hundred dollars I’d spent on the mullet, balao, squid and Spanish mackerel that needed to be preserved. When the Onan was up and operating, it was music to my ears. [links]

If your transmission is acting up, then you may be asking some of these questions.

Fix it or sell it: Once you have the repair estimate and the vehicle's value, then you’re ready to determine if the transmission is worth repairing or not.

You notice the car isn't shifting right and that faint whining noise is back. Unless you want to be stuck without a paddle, then you should get it checked before the major signs your transmission went out show up.

If you’ve got a low fluid level in your transmission, use BlueDevil Transmission Sealer to stop the leak and avoid many of these transmission problems. here

The symptoms of a failing transmission usually follow after you start to see some of the signs of failure. For example, If you’ve got rattling or humming in your transmission from a bad bearing, you’ll likely see a leak turn up soon as the bad bearings will allowing the input or output shaft to wobble which will ruin the seal. Similarly, harsh shifts can wear out clutches and bands and lead to slipping. Eventually, this slipping leads to your transmission not going into gear at all and you can no longer drive your car. here

Similarly, slow and hanging shifts can be a sign of worn component or abnormal pressures in your transmission. If you’re experiencing slow shifts, consider changing your transmission filter and see if it is clogged and causing the problems you’re having. If that doesn’t fix the problem then you may need to take your transmission checked by a specialist. more

The first step in learning how to listen to your transmission is true for any component of any car. Start by driving a few miles on the highway, and a few miles around town with the radio off and no one else in the car. These quality miles with your vehicle will allow you to hear what a healthy and happy car sounds like. Try opening the windows and listen to the sounds your car makes as you idle, turn corners, accelerate, brake, turn on and off different equipment like the air conditioning or headlights. Also, watch the gauges your car has to see where they read during normal operation. Knowing what your car sounds and acts like when it’s working properly will help you notice when something different is happening which can allow you to make an early diagnosis of a failing component, which will save you money and frustration.

The quickest way to ruin your transmission is by running it with a low fluid level. Check your fluid level often to make sure it’s at the full mark to keep your transmission cool and properly lubricated. Besides keeping a full fluid level, avoiding shifts at heavy throttle or shifting while your vehicle is moving can help your transmission from wearing out prematurely.
