Better hole shot. Absolutetly. That's what they were invented for. Changing to a new prop with a different pitch may do that too, but for a lot more money and not without other affects as well. more

The caveat is that they don't work on all boats. Give me a stern heavy boat, and I won't be without one. here

If your only problem is being UNDERpowered, your best bet would be to change to a lower pitch prop. here

Adding to what the fellas said, it depends on your boat and motor.

These two terms are oftern used as if they are the same thing but I don't think they are. Maybe the symptoms and causes are the same but they are two different things. I know I tend to have a ventillation problem in rough water because the prop gets very close to the surface, or if I get sea grass stuck on the frontside of the motor it will create turbulant water around the prop.

Ventilation vs. Cavitation
Frequently confused with cavitation, ventilation is when your propeller drags air from above the water into the blade. Cavitation is the "boiling action" seen around propeller blades, as the water vaporizes in the pocket of reduced pressure that forms on the rear of a propeller blade moving through the water. Ventilation, particularly when your propeller comes out of the water, can damage your motor by allowing it to exceed its maximum permitted speed. You know your propeller is ventilating when your forward speed drops as the engine revs up suddenly, whining as it leaves the water.

The cavitation plate would be used on full tunnel hull applications where the desire to get up shallow would be enhanced by forcing the bow down and creating lift on the furthest most point rearward on the boat. (The theory of hydraulics - you can't compress a fluid).

The cavitation plate, or more correctly anti-cavitation plate, is a full-wrap device that is secured completely around the anti-ventilation fin, extending both forward and trailing behind the outboard's midsection.

This also keeps water around the propeller while getting up on plane, maintaining plane in shallow water, and allowing less cavitation while turning. (Anti-Cavitation in this case - would be described as improving the propellers ability to maintain a solid bite - minimizing slippage due to air being introduced into the stream of water feeding the prop while running.) The whale tail is not a full-wrap, designed to be installed on the anti-ventilation plate, extending only behind the midsection.

Full tunnel - The area starting from approximately under the boat's center console, center of the keel, designed into the hull going all the way to the transom. (Used to feed water to the prop while on plane and to achieve maximum shallow water ability while using a jack plate). here

Outboard engines are equipped with an anti-ventilation fin, an integral part of the mid-section casting, located directly above the propeller.

Porpoising is a condition in which a boat will "bounce" while underway. The use of a hydrofoil will help eliminate this condition as it forces the bow down at all times. The other benefit of a hydrofoil is the gas savings it can provide. This is possible by getting the boat up on plane quicker and sometimes higher so there is less contact with the water. Large horsepower outboards can also benefit from the use of a hydrofoil as well. The power trim result is exaggerated and needs less movement to achieve the same result. A hydrofoil is a great investment that will provide a better ride for all boat styles and sizes.

Hydrofoils or Whale Tails, are a device that attaches to your outboard or out drives cavitation plate that provides lift at the stern of the boat which brings the bow of the boat down. This action is crucial to getting your boat up to plane quicker. Not only does this save you time and gas but it also increases overall speed. Hydrofoils are especially beneficial to small outboard motors as usually these units do not have power trim and have a very small cavitation plate and do not provide much lift.
