Engines made by Mercury featuring the "Bigfoot" gear case are all four-stroke (the most common kind of engine, featuring intake, compression, power and exhaust). They are available in 40 hp, 50 hp and 60 hp versions as well as a 9.9 hp model. [links]

A Bigfoot outboard is an outboard engine designed for larger private watercraft such as houseboats or pontoons, made by Mercury Marine. "Bigfoot" is a trademark registered by Mercury and refers to a specially designed gear case.

The Bigfoot gear case is built longer with larger parts. This provides greater control and thrust, specifically designed for larger loads, according to Mercury, which also states that the larger parts make the engines more efficient and reliable.

A Bigfoot outboard is best suited for larger boats and boats whose design creates water turbulence around conventional engines. This is because the longer gear case pushes the prop down further into the water -- where it is not disturbed by turbulence from the boat -- and the larger gears provide greater thrust and control.

RPM Information: 5000-5500
Your engine's RPM range is important in choosing the right propeller for a given application. For example, if you look at your tachometer at top speed and it is not within the engine's RPM range then that is generally not good. You want your RPM's to be within the proper range while at wide open throttle (WOT). Be sure to do your testing under your normal boating conditions and with a good propeller (not bent, cracked, or excessively chipped). [links]

Let me give you some insight. My Merc 115 HP 4 Stroke was only hitting 4800 RPM with a 13.75 X 15 prop.
I put a 13.75 X 13 prop on her, and WOT is now 6200. Perfect. Consider, that at my elevation (5,500 feet above sea level), my motor is only putting out about 90 HP, and I have the same lower unit gear ratio (2.33:1) that you do. We're not THAT far apart. here

Somebody stated that every 2" of pitch you drop will give you 400 RPM increase. This would indicate that you should be going to a 5" pitch prop. This, of course, is preposterous. here

Does anyone have any advise for me as to what the problem might be as I continue to get the dealer to see the light.
