John was born and brought up in Bermuda and started sailing as a child, racing locally and offshore before turning to cruising. He has sailed over 100,000 miles, most of it on his McCurdy & Rhodes 56, Morgan's Cloud, including eight ocean races to Bermuda, culminating in winning his class twice in the Newport Bermuda Race. He has skippered a series of voyages in the North Atlantic, the majority of which have been to the high latitudes. John has been helping others go voyaging by sharing his experience for twenty years, first in yachting magazines and, for the last 18 years, as co-editor/publisher of AAC. more

Nothing on this website or in direct communications received from us, or in our articles in the media, should be construed to mean or imply that offshore voyaging is anything other than potentially hazardous. Dangers such as, but not limited to, extreme weather, cold, ice, lack of help or assistance, gear failure, grounding, and falling overboard could injure or kill you and wreck your boat. Decisions such as, but not limited to, heading offshore, where you go, and how you equip your boat, are yours and yours alone. The information on this web site is based on what has worked for the authors in the past, but that does not mean it will work for you, or that it is the best, or even a good way for you to do things. The more systems a boat has, the more it will cost to maintain. Catamarans usually have a lot more systems (engines, plumbing, electrics etc.) than monohulls. Getting a mechanic to service two engines and sail drives will be more expensive than a comparable monohull with one engine. here

In some corners of the world, it’s a benefit to have a shallow draft. The Bahamas, for example, are famously shallow, and having a deep-drafted monohull can be a big disadvantage. But in the vast majority of places, it makes no real difference if you catamaran draws four feet, and your friend’s monohull draws 6. You’ll both get into the same spaces. [links]

If you’re using marinas a lot, or just aren’t very confident in manoeuvring your boat in a tight spot, then a catamaran can have advantages. The two engine setup that most cats use, means that you can put one engine in forwards and one in reverse, and therefore spin the boat in a circle on the spot. more

The catamaran owner has a big advantage in terms of redundant systems. The spare engine and rudder mean that you’ll probably never have to limp into a harbour under sail (a tricky manoeuvre for those not used to it).

Over the last decade, catamarans have been making a huge impact in the cruising world. The massive entertaining areas, the lack of heeling, and the ‘floating apartment’ feel have captured the hearts of many a liveaboard sailor. This is because they offer a level of comfort, which, for some, makes the difference between setting off on that life-long dream of a trip, and staying at home.

A unique single, curved daggerboard or rotating C-foil with an asymmetrical profile was developed, an upscaled version of the ClubSwan 36 foil. This can be set on either side in a similar fashion to the DSS foil used on the 142ft Canova and was designed to create both sideways and vertical lift, as well as to reduce hull drag.

The first major test for the Swan flagship looks set to be the Rolex Fastnet Race this August. Bearing in mind that Skorpios has the draught of a small container ship at 7.4m, it could be a stressful event for her navigator. With an overall length of 42.6m including bowsprit, Skorpios will overtake the Baltic Yachts built Nilaya as the biggest monohull ever to enter the Rolex Fastnet Race. here

Dmitry Rybolovlev, an international businessman and current president of AS Monaco Football Club, is the owner and lucky helmsman of Skorpios. The ClubSwan 125 is named after the Greek island owned by his family trusts.

In 2016, Nautor’s Swan launched the innovative Juan Kouyoumdjian-designed ClubSwan 50, the first non-Frers Swan in four decades. It proved an instant success and became a European Yacht of the Year winner. But perhaps the even greater result of that partnership is the birth of this new supermaxi. here

Coastal cruisers tend to feature a more luxurious layout, with larger sofas and more complex interior features. Additionally, storage space is generally reduced to allow for the inclusion of other amenities.
