When you think of motor racing you probably picture ultra-fast cars lapping around a short circuit for an hour or so before the champagne corks start flying. But did you know there exists a whole other side to the sport — one that tests not just out-and-out speed, but efficiency, distance and driver endurance?
Having been held annually since 1923, 24 Hours of Le Mans claims the title of the world’s oldest endurance race. Taking place on the prestigious Circuit de la Sarthe, Le Mans — which is often referred to as the ‘Grand Prix of Endurance and Efficiency’ — pits competing teams against each other in a battle of speed, performance and efficiency. Unlike other motor races, the winner isn’t the first to cross the line, but the car to cover the longest distance in a 24 hour period without sustaining mechanical damage. here
Along with the race track, Spring Mountain also has a clubhouse, pool, 140 member garages, helicopter hanger, 42 condos, and an artificial lake with its own desert island. [links]
Morris told Bloomberg one of the straights for the circuit would stretch for 1.8 kilometres: a decision driven by two members of the ranch who requested a place to land their private jets. It can also be used as a drag strip. Because, why not, right? here
However, that title is about to be yanked from the infamous circuit by US internet entrepreneur John Morris and his Spring Mountain Motorsports Ranch.
T HE title of longest permanent race track in the world is held by Germany’s Nurburgring Nordschliefe, measuring 20.81 kilometres in length.
Spring Mountain Motorsports Ranch currently has a 9.8-kilometre circuit which is used for track days, hot laps, and driver training – there are no sanctioned motorsport events. The current circuit is already the longest in the Americas, and one of the longest in the world here
Morris plans on building a 24-kilometre track on his property where rich folk with a penchant for speed will be able to indulge themselves. If completed, the circuit's length will eclipse the Nordschliefe’s current record.
Most of the drivers don’t use the diaper while racing. This is because drivers go to the bathroom before the race. … Drivers also use salt tablets to avoid dehydration so the drivers don’t have enough urine left to use a diaper.

In any event, McLaren’s car passed Miles, robbing him of a potentially historic triple crown (he’d already won prestigious races at Daytona and Sebring). … Beebe acknowledged that he gave the order for a three-way finish, but claimed afterward he had no idea it would cost Miles the win. Though, admittedly, it is fitting as the conclusion of a story that’s all about corporate meddling. The real life Le Mans ’66 ended with a historic finish: Ford trounced the frontrunner Ferrari as all three Ford cars crossed the finish line in a dead heat.
Although it’s the most legendary American Le Mans car of all time, the Ford GT is far from the only one to compete and win at the French endurance race. here
Home to the Isle of Man TT and Manx Grand Prix motorcycle races, the Isle of Man’s Snaefell Mountain Course is the most dangerous circuit in the world. Since racing began there in 1911, the treacherous road course has claimed 229 lives until 2010. here
Known as the Circuit de la Sarthe, a single lap of Le Mans covers approximately 8.5 miles.
The record for distance driven during the event was set by an Audi R15 during the 2010 race, and it stands at 3,360 miles. To put that into perspective, that’s 420 laps at an average speed of 140mph – and you thought F1 drivers were good at endurance racing. here

Here, racers take to the circuit for a full 24-hour stint, covering vast distances on the 3.56-mile circuit. Podium places are given to drivers who cover the longest distances, and the record for the event stands at 2,666 miles, completed by three-man team driving a Porsche 935 in 1982. [links]
