Drive to a nearby trucking company, granary, junkyard or scrap metal yard that has a drive-on scale. Weigh the combined weight of your truck and loaded trailer combined. That is your GVWR (gross vehicle weight rating). Your tow vehicle's maximum capacity must include the weight of the vehicle itself, passengers, gear, and the boat and trailer.

Move the winch stand further back to lighten the weight on the tongue once the bunks are as far back as possible. [links]

Calculate the tongue weight of your loaded trailer. A tongue weight that is too heavy will create drag, be hard on your transmission and use more fuel. A tongue weight that is too light will cause the vehicle to sway while transporting. Proper tongue weight is 5% to 7% of the total weight of the trailer, boat and gear. Rest the trailer coupler of a boat less than 2,500 pounds on a household scale. more

For boats larger than 2500 pounds obtain a brick the same height as the household scale. Place the brick and the scale 3 feet apart. Lay a pipe down the center of the scale from just under the readout, to the bottom. Lay a second pipe from top to bottom on the brick. This will center the pressure of the load. Lay a 2-by-4 piece of wood across the pipes. Re-calibrate the household scale to zero to compensate for the extra weight of the pipe and wood frame. Place the trailer coupler on the crosspiece. Multiply the readout on the household scale by 3. more

Tongue weight is simply the downward force that the tongue of the trailer exerts on the hitch that is connected to the vehicle. Too little tongue weight can cause the back end of the vehicle to lift which can result in a very dangerous condition known as trailer sway. On the other hand, too much tongue weight can cause the back end of the vehicle to sag which negatively effects the handling of the vehicle, the visibility of the driver, and the effectiveness of the vehicle’s brakes. here

Traditionally before Weigh Safe, trailer owners had to find a bathroom scale, elevate it at ball height with a box or cinder block, and place the tongue directly on top. Not only is this method time consuming and inefficient, but it’s useless for heavy trailers whose tongue weight will surely outweigh the bathroom scale’s max-weight limitations. While there are additional methods to get around this, they are arduous and not very efficient. more

Weigh Safe – as well as most experts agree – that an acceptable tongue weight for any trailer is somewhere between 9 to 15 percent of the gross trailer weight (GTW). Therefore, if you are towing a 5000 lbs trailer, the tongue weight should be measured at approximately 500 lbs. here

Kent Sundling from Mr. Truck.com shows trailer owners how to measure tongue weight with the Weigh Safe trailer hitch in this informative video. Specifically, Kent uses Weigh Safe to properly balance a 5600 LBS loaded trailer being pulled by a GMC Canyon for a safe and comfortable ride on dangerously snowy highways through Rocky Mountain passes. Towing is not an easy task and usually requires unique beasts to get the job done correctly. Among other things, trailers require a more robust frame, suspension system, engine, and axle to withstand greater loads. Just as you are afraid to cross a bridge made of lightweight materials, worrying that it will collapse due to your weight, so you should not force the truck to bear a load that exceeds its towing capacity rating.

For the experienced RV user, the weight of the tongue is the lever. The trailer axle is the fulcrum, and the lever rotates when towing. In this way, the trailer can turn and adjust according to the road conditions, speed, and wind direction without moving left and right. When the weight of the tongue is even, it will prevent most of the swings. If the tongue’s weight is very light, the weight will move behind the tongue; if the trailer tongue weight is too heavy, it will travel before its axis. It affects the way your RV or trailer shakes, stops and moves on the road.

It is important to know about the trailer tongue weight as it is an essential part of towing any trailer. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced RV user, you must know what tongue weight is, how to calculate tongue weight, and how to make adjustments. It is essential to staying safe while towing. Also, the tongue weight is the downward pressure from the trailer tongue to the trailer’s hook. The industry standard for trailer tongue weight percentageis 9% to 14% of the total trailer weight (GTW). The tongue’s weight allows you to control the trailer when towed, thereby making driving safer. If the tongue weight is not calculated correctly by a travel trailer tongue weight calculator, it will cause the trailer to sway and cause an accident when towing.
