Then, when you get to 500 hours, it's a combination of the rev-limiter lamp flashing and the tach indication. Each flash of the lamp indicates 500 hours. So for 540 hours, the rev-limiter lamp would flash once and the tach would show 400 rpm. For 1040 hours the lamp would flash twice, and the tach would show 400 rpm, etc. [links]
When you first turn the key on, ALL lamps should light and the caution buzzer should sound, then the hours indication takes place. So if you're not showing any flash of the rev light after that first diagnostic check, then the 500 rpm tach indication should show your 50 hours on the motor. And just as a matter of interest, even my tach, which HAS the hour meter built in, shows the same indications when the key is first turned on. The needle jumps to 1300 rpm, and I have about 130 hours on the motor.
seller claims it has just over 50hours on the engine and apparently the way it shows its on the RPM meter the same needle the shows the rpm works with the hour meter. more

cant say i ever heard of it working that way but i never cared enough to ask questions about it so i am uninformed about it by choice [links]
obviously when the engine is running the rpm are shown but when the ignition is on before kick start the engine the rpm stays on around 500-600rpm = between 50 to 60 hours and that is how it shown the hours if its on 1000rpm equals 100hours and so on more
Reading and recording information from an hour meter on a Mercruiser engine allows the owner to keep track of regular maintenance intervals. Hour meters also allow a new prospective owner to know how much use has been placed on the engine (similar to an odometer in a car). Keeping a log of maintenance procedures such as oil changes, filters, spark plugs and mechanical upgrades, along with the corresponding hour information, can be very helpful in ensuring that your engine continues to run at peak efficiency.
Create a maintenance log for necessary and performed services. Consult and follow your owner’s manual for proper preventive maintenance in intervals.
Read the hour meter from left to right. Most hour meters have a five-digit display. The first digit is thousands, second is hundreds, third is tens, fourth is the single hour digit and fifth is tenths of an hour.

Well, hell. I had NO idea you could get one of these on a panel. I worry and worry about my "running hours" for maintenance. I bring it in once a year but think I'm well under 100 running hours but hate to chance it. [links]
what guage/s does the boat have? I have 01 225 Optis with the smartcraft guages. I just toggle thru the menu til you get to "engine hours". more
It's getting pretty expensive though; in fact, I've thought about learning how to change my oil. I think there's a pump I'd need but have no idea.
