Although the impressive nearly 36,000-foot descent marks a new era in underwater exploration, the latest expedition into the deepest point on earth also found something disturbing: a plastic bag and candy wrappers.

“Our team had to pioneer new camera systems that could be mounted on the submersible, operate at up to 10,000m [32,800 feet] below sea level and work with robotic landers with camera systems that would allow us to film Victor’s submersible on the bottom of the ocean,” Geffen explained. The camera team also had to design new rigs to record inside the vessel.

Scientists from the Vescovo expedition plan to test the creatures they collected during the deep dive to see if they contain microplastics. A study published in February found that amphipods in six deep-sea trenches had ingested microplastics, a tiny type of plastic that originates from larger plastics that have broken down, as well as from beauty products like toothpaste and facial scrubs with microbeads. more

Between April 28 and May 5, 2019, the Limiting Factor completed four dives to the bottom of Challenger Deep and one final dive on May 7, 2019 to the Sirena Deep which is also in the Mariana Trench, approximately 128 miles to the northeast. Two of the dives, including the deepest one made on April 28, were solo dives piloted by Vescovo.

Dive #5 (May 7, 2019): Scientific Dive in the Sirena Deep which is part of the Mariana Trench (Victor Vescovo, Pilot; Dr. Alan Jamieson, Chief Scientist). First manned descent to the bottom of the Sirena Deep, which focused on geological, biological, and video survey and collection in the trench basin. Time on bottom was three hours (176 minutes) and the deepest piece of mantle rock ever recovered from the surface of the western slope of the Mariana Trench was collected. more

"You cast on the way down and on the way up, and if you add up the metres we measured - it works out at 1.5 million metres of water," he said. This will help researchers better understand ocean circulation, which is needed to improve the computer models that project future climate scenarios. more

Thomas Jane plays a farmer plotting to kill his wife in this Netflix original, but of course irony rears its ugly head and his uppance doth come. "1922" plays like a radio true-crime drama from the 1940s, but way too long and with an inexplicably distracting accent from Jane, who has to carry a lot of this film on his own. Sadly, like his character, he can't quite get away with it.
