All of the teams involved in the 36th America’s Cup in 2021 – Team New Zealand, Team UK, Luna Rossa from Italy, and American Magic have indicated they will continue to be involved while there is the prospect of more syndicates joining them.
A Protocol Governing AC37 will be published within eight months including the provisions outlined in this release.
In addition, INEOS have confirmed they will continue to back Sir Ben Ainslie's team to win sport's oldest international trophy, giving much needed continuity, the cornerstone of every successful America's Cup team. It will be the first time a British team has competed in three consecutive Cup cycles since Sir Thomas Lipton and the Royal Ulster YC bids between 1899 to 1930.
There are a number of different options but it is intended that the Venue for the Match will be determined within six months and the dates of racing announced in the Protocol, if not before. here
"It is very exciting to have a new Challenger of Record to continue to build the scale of the America's Cup globally. The AC75's and the unprecedented broadcast reach of the exciting racing from Auckland's stunning Waitemata harbour have really put Auckland and the America's Cup at the forefront of international sport." The poll, conducted by Curia Market research involving 1000 people over the age of 18 drawn randomly from 24,000 telephone numbers from August 12-17, shows 72 percent are in favor of the America’s Cup being in Auckland next time.
The next America’s Cup is expected to be held in 2024 and will involve the same 75-foot foiling monohulls though they are set to be modified to increase performance and reduce costs.
Asked if they were aware the government funding offer was $31m compared to $133m for the 2021 regatta, 45 percent replied yes, with 51 percent replying no. But when they were asked if they would like to see the New Zealand government increase their offer from $31m to $100m, it was another close call. here
Forty percent of the people polled supported the increased government funding to $100m with 45 percent opposed. Fifteen percent were unsure. Interestingly, 51 percent of Aucklanders involved in the survey supported increased funding, while 38 percent opposed it. [links]
While the club had remained on the sidelines since its last challenge for the 2002-03 America’s Cup, they were eager to help guide the event again, but first this partnership had to win in 2021. However, as was on full display in January 2021, this effort could not have ended much worse.
However, time heals all wounds… sort of. Both New York Yacht Club and American Magic are committed to participating in the next America’s Cup. What’s less clear is if they will be doing it together.
It was a big step when an American campaign, alongside New York Yacht Club, challenged in October 2017 for the 36th America’s Cup. It would be a new syndicate led by Hap Fauth and Doug DeVos, guided by skipper Terry Hutchinson, and representing the most storied club in America’s Cup history.
