In the year 1349, there was an earthquake which severely destroyed a part of the Colosseum. The gladiator fights were stopped during the reign of Emperor Honorius in 404 A.D when an Egyptian monk visited Rome and opposed the bloodshed in the combats and animal slaughter during the gladiator games. But starting in the early 18 th century, popes began to consider conserving the monument as a holy Christian site. Although it should be noted that it is uncertain whether any early Christians had actually been killed in the Colosseum. more

A special tour to these restricted areas costs approximately an additional USD 11, an extra cost that we highly recommend for a unique experience of the Colosseum. Led by the official Colosseum guides, the tour can be booked via tour operators. Please note that the tour can only host up to 24 people for a visit of 20 minutes, and due to its high demand, availability can be scarce. Hence, plan the tour in advance and book accordingly. “There is no way that such a thing could be done without direct permission from the highest levels of the Vatican. The Colloseum of Rome is owned by the Vatican, and specifically the Diocese of Rome, also called the Holy See. If anyone wants to do anything there, they must get permissions from the office of the Diocese of Rome. This exhibition, called “Cathargo: the immortal myth” could not be held there at all unless permissions were granted at high levels.”
