In some ports a guardienage service that checks the boat at regular intervals is available, at a typical cost of £60-£100 per month. However, the quality of such services varies considerably, so it’s worth getting recommendations from other boat owners and ensuring your mooring arrangements are bullet proof. A good idea for a boat that’s predominately used for two or three longish trips each season is to dry-sail from a boat yard – this can frequently work out cheaper than the cost of summer mooring plus laying up ashore for the winter.

While some of these boats will have had a hard start to their life, many are used for fewer than 20 weeks a year. As ever, even if buying from a reputable company, it's vital to get a survey: the UK's Yacht Designers and Surveyors Association has a number of surveyors who travel regularly to all parts of the Med. here

Perhaps one of the biggest drawbacks of former charter boats is that they have been getting bigger over the years – 34ft is now the smallest in many fleets, which means it's becoming more difficult to find a boat that's an optimum size for one couple. Many owners are tempted to buy a boat that’s larger than their needs – beyond sleeping and cooking you probably won't use the inside very much – and bigger boats are harder to handle and much more expensive to maintain, Equally, don't stretch your budget in buying the boat, especially if planning to live onboard - worrying about money will quickly detract from the experience. It’s also important to recognise the point at which you become de facto resident in country – when this happens you may become liable for import duties on the boat, as well as local taxation. You may also need a local skipper’s qualification and to satisfy local regulations for safety equipment. In many cases the rules for becoming de facto resident are complex, but for EU citizens the starting point generally applies when you spend 183 days or more during a 12-month period in any one territory. Just an hour farther down the road, in Les Sables d’Olonne, is Privilege Marine, founded in 1985 by Philippe Jeantot (who is also the founder of the Vendée Globe round-the-world race that starts and finishes here). An upscale brand known for its luxurious semi-custom interiors, Privilege builds good-looking, solidly constructed cruisers. Fortuitously, we arrive in time for a brief chat with Jens Gerhardt, CEO of the Hanse Group, which had just bought a controlling interest in Privilege.

Something of a shockwave rippled through the multihull world back in 2014 when Germany’s Bavaria Yachts announced its purchase of French catamaran builder Nautitech. What would happen to this small builder with a fine reputation for building quick, seaworthy cats? [links]

A long row of lidless catamarans, awaiting their innards and deck molds, stretches into the distance as we walk onto the assembly floor. I am surprised to learn that only 50-plus-foot cats are made here in Bordeaux—the new 50, 52, 560 and 620. The smaller boats—the new 40, 42, 450 and evergreen 380—are built in Belleville-sur-Vie, some hours away. For someone who has witnessed the slow death-by-a-thousand-cuts decline of American boatbuilding over the last decade, it is hard to believe that 50ft to 65ft cats could sell by the hundreds. Indeed, so successful has the new flagship, the massive 77ft Seventy 7 been that it is getting its own production facility in order to keep up with demand.

The first thing I notice in the mold shop is the smell—more to the point, the lack of it. The styrene stench that has historically permeated fiberglass-boat factories is a thing of the past here. Strict European environmental laws have seen to that; it is so expensive to control styrene emissions that it is easier for builders to go to closed-mold construction. Lagoon, thanks to its background in building high-tech racing multihulls, was one of the first production builders to adopt a resin-infusion process, in which fiberglass rovings and core materials are laid up dry in the mold, which is then covered with plastic sheeting before a powerful pump creates a vacuum that sucks the resin into the layup. Cored hulls can thus be made lighter and stronger, and quality control—those words come up so often that it must be tattooed into the Lagoon subconscious—is much easier when you know you’re not going to find voids in the laminate. Plus, it makes for a much healthier working environment.

While it’s difficult for a new brand to become established in the monohull world, it’s different in the multihull arena. There’s no better example of an interloper muscling into the room and making itself comfortable than Bali Catamarans, an offshoot of the well-known Catana brand. Conceived by Catana Group CEO Olivier Poncin to make the most of the catamaran’s most desired attribute (for cruisers, at least)—comfort—Bali’s three models have firmly established themselves both in the charter and owner’s markets, thanks to their competitive pricing and unabashed focus on maximizing onboard living space, in the space of just three years. From the outset, Bali went after owners with no preconceptions, a strategy that has worked well for them. The fact that the cats actually sail well doesn’t hurt them at all. more

Trimaran yachts are large, sailing vessels generally used for time-honored boating pursuits such as overnight cruising and day sailing. These sailing vessels have a rich legacy as vessels that are sought-after due to their deeper-depth draft and exceedingly wide beam, features that make them exceptionally great for overnight cruising and day sailing. Across our current listings, the average capacity for trimaran sailing vessels is 10 people with a maximum capacity of 30 passengers, and the average length overall (LOA) is 35 feet. Listings range in size from 16 feet long to 85 feet long, with an average sail area of 1,140 square feet and a maximum sail area of 2,227 square feet. Listed hull types include trimaran, catamaran, monohull and other. here

A trimaran is a specific type of multihull vessel that features three hulls and is typically designed for sailing or racing on open waters. Also known as a double outrigger, the arrangement is specifically comprised of a main hull with two smaller hulls that are attached by lateral beams. Some trimarans are used as ferries, while there are also designs in this class that are used as warships. Originating in the South Pacific, the double-outrigger style of the trimaran was first used for fishing and ferrying between the islands of Madagascar and Southeast Asia.

Trimarans, historically, have been crafted out of wood materials. The original styles were built using found and farmed timber and often resembled rafts tied together using bamboo or other materials as beams. Today, the wooden models are built much like traditional sailboats. Thanks to modern technology, there are also composite trimarans, namely of a fiberglass finish, available to those who don’t want the upkeep of wood. Folding designs are also available for easy trailering and marina storage. more
