There’s another benefit to cultivating good relations with the locals: You can hire a caretaker to look after your island while you’re gone.

Private islands sound expensive — indeed, many of them are. Just ask celebrities like Johnny Depp, who shelled out $3.6 million for Little Halls Pond Cay in the Bahamas’ Exuma district. Or Eddie Murphy, who paid $15 million for his own slice of heaven.

Don’t let that be you. Instead of jumping into a purchase immediately, rent or stay on a nearby island first. This can help you decide whether you like the region and whether you’re cut out for island life at all. [links]

In the US, Canada or Britain, you may be able to run a somewhat autonomous island “nation.” But it’s unlikely these countries will allow you to secede. [links]

If you still want to live in a tropical climate, buying a home on a tropical island is always an option.

You can become the owner of not one, but 6 islands, with picturesque views and unique wildlife, located on San Francisco River in northeastern Brazil, for just $79,500. The reason why nobody has grabbed them up yet is probably that they are technically not buying these islands as much as they are buying the right to use them for 99 years, and they will be subject to some vague “small, yearly taxes.” more

These small tree-covered islands surrounded by the crystal clear waters of Sheep Lake will certainly give you peace and joy, but probably not much of a privacy — they are only 25 miles from the closest fishing village, so there might be a lot of visitors and the island might not be that private anymore. But if you’re ok with that, you can buy this island for $50,989.

A small undeveloped island on St. Johns River, in New Brunswick, Canada is up for sale for less than $29,900. The only disadvantage is that every spring, flood waters cover the entire island, so you can`t really build anything there. During the other seasons the island is a great place for camping or kayaking.

Owning an island seems like a dream come true — but they cost a lot of money and apparently only rich celebrities and billionaires like Johnny Depp, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Mel Gibson can afford them. It turns out that you could also get an island for a more than reasonable price! However some of these deals have special requirements, which is why people are not rushing to buy them. There’s a bonus for budget travelers at the end: an island for free!

The Dole corporation bought Lanai in 1922 and used it as a pineapple plantation. Here, a worker on the plantation in 1955.

"Back in the '50s, the police and the company would meet the plane if people were coming over the island and didn't have a place to stay. They put them back on the plane," de la Cruz says. more

If you pass by an empty island, you will most likely ignore it, or if you have nothing else to do, you’ll spend some hours there and go back home. This is not what Louis Robert Harold Stephens did when he spotted a trio of islands sitting in a park and doing nothing. By adopting these unwanted, unused, and unclaimed little islands that had paled into invisibility, he became the father of the nation. Not ours! But of the Lagoan Isles. A school teacher before the ‘rediscovery’, he styles himself as the Grand Duke. They still remain desolate and unoccupied, but maybe you can swim across and save the islands in distress? here

Can you claim an unclaimed island?

Snow? Surely talking about Europe? Well, you wish. This large uninhabited area is not on the usual world map – it is below it. Much, much below it. In Antarctica. And the best part is, when you hammer your flag in, nobody is going to notice (or care)! And the flag will just freeze there until the kingdom comes. Also, it is about time our winged friends get a neighbour. Who knows, you might spot (or cuddle) an emperor penguin there. Then you can officially say that you rub shoulders with royalty! here
