  • The teak plate at the top of the compression post was one piece; no way to remove it without splitting it into two pieces along the grain. I did that.

Our sail configuration was full mizzen, main, and genoa as we exited the Golden Gate. Our route planner, Rich Shema (www.weatherguy.com) had already warned us that we were heading into a gale. By dusk we found 35-knot winds; seas were 15-22 feet when we passed Point Sur. Our GulfStar 43' ketch was not at all fazed by the sea state nor by the wind. Her ability to surf is incredible. The raw water impeller is difficult to see, so I custom-made some screws with wing-nuts for easier removal. The raw water goes from the pump to a refrigeration heat exchanger (engine-driven cold-plate). So impeller bits are not welcome in that heat exchanger. For this reason I added a strainer after the raw water pump to catch any failing impeller vanes. This is a great idea, it helps you to know when to replace the impeller too. more

We have a Gulfstar 37 and love it! It's about my 9th boat and the best yet. We live aboard here in Southern California and also plan to cruise down south next year.

Ready to cruise NOW. This bluewater cruiser has been fully restored. A 1980 Gulfstar 50 center cockpit ketch, that can go anywhere in the world economically, and with room for your whole family. She is our labor of love. We have owned her for 8 years and lived aboard for 6. We recently added many new items. See “Things We’ve Added” in list below. She is a cutter-rigged ketch for full versatility of sail management.

Below deck she has been upgraded to a warm honey satin teak finish and white interior design with light beige upholstery and sleeps up to 10 in 3 staterooms and salon. To top it off she has a 3-zone AC/Heat for creature comfort. This boat is designed to cruise with family and friends, comfortably and economically. We have enjoyed this boat in the Bahamas with our family and grandchildren. She is neat, clean and reliable. We will entertain all offers, purchase, trade, or combination (i.e.: Cash, RV, Real Estate) sold as-is where-is. To see videos of our boat go to the links below.

FOR SALE BY OWNER - Great cruising, and spacious liveaboard sailing yacht. Sabbatical is a 1977 Gulfstar 50 center cockpit Mark II Ketch. We have been the sole owner and cruising part of the year aboard her for over 20 years, while constantly upgrading her. She is the 3 cabin model with a classic teak interior. Recent upgrades include new standing rigging, the addition of 400 watts of solar panels, new genoa, addition of Adler Barbour 12 volt refrigeration and the addition of a new bowsprit/anchor pulpit. The auxilliary diesel engine is a reliable 85 HP Perkins 4-236. We have recently sailed her offshore from Venezuela and the ABC islands back to the US and she is fully equipped for offshore sailing and already equipped for long term cruising and liveaboard. At the moment, this sailboat is located in Ft. Lauderdale. We will be temporarily aboard during April and scheduling showings during that time. Asking price has been reduced to $99,500 during this time and we will consider all serious offers for a quick sale while we are at the boat. If interested, please contact us by email at alhnelson@aol.com. You can also contact us by phone before April 8th at (303)258-3745.

Grouse has several stages of water purification. First it passes through a ‘whole house’ charcoal filter after which water is again filtered for ice maker. At galley sink there is a separate spigot fed by additional two stage filter under sink. Water is additionally filtered prior to entering tank with in-line filter to be used on hose. more

The Gulfstar 50 design has proven to be a stout, practical cruising yacht. Grouse's classic overhangs and styling will turn heads in any harbor, while her sloop rig allows her sailplan to be easily handled by a crew of two. Her protected center cockpit provides shelter in rough water and a spacious location to relax with guests in a quiet anchorage. Below deck, her spacious two cabin layout will comfortably accommodate six for extended cruising, with arrangements for additional sea berths in the main salon. Solid teak is used liberally throughout, with finely finished storage spaces and lockers with louvered doors. An excellent liveaboard, coastal or blue water cruiser.
