At Claridge's your wish is their command and you control the pacing of your tea service. You will also have no trouble obtaining a cab as te doorman will be happy to do that for you. I'm staying at Claridge's right now, and the old saying is true: when I die I don't want to go to heaven, I just want to come back here! You'll be fine on the timing. here

Allow twenty minutes for the cab ride down.

The average afternoon tea lasts about an hour and a half, however if you factor in the length of the taxi ride, queuing at the theatre and enough time for a pre-show drink you're probably just about right with two and a half hours. [links]

Cabs may not be plentiful if, e.g. it's a Friday or raining [links]

The British are known for their love of tea, scones and cake, so as the tea room capital of the world, London must live up to some high expectations. Alongside its grand, sophisticated afternoon tea establishments, the capital has a range of smaller, quainter and infinitely more charming tea rooms – perfect spots for sitting with a book and a homemade treat on a cold winter afternoon, or for indulging in a little luxury with a group of friends. more

If you’d like to try this “afternoon tea thing” while visiting London, look no further. This list is long, yes, but comprehensive. If you aren’t sold on the delectable, indulgent offering from at least one place on this list, maybe tea just isn’t your thing! (Try one of these must-have London foods instead?) In any case, here are the best afternoon teas in London, to inspire you and whet your appetite.

The menu by Roger Olsson and Ryan Thompson also steps back from tradition. Finger sandwiches are concocted using Asian ingredients, and the scones come in unexpected flavors like matcha and sesame or Earl Grey. The pastries, conjured up by chef Thibault Marchand, also speak of the hotel’s simplicity, like the beautiful petit fours. more

Enjoy your tea on their newly opened outdoor terrace (as of 12 April 2021); it includes a cake carriage with mini chocolate-mousse tarts and salted caramel choux pastries and finger sandwiches. As you enjoy the mouth-watering delicacies, sip one of the teas from their extensive listing of around 45 infusions like Jasmine Dragon Pearls and Hattialli.

August 2021: We’ve updated the latest prices, menus and opening times on all venues. Experience high tea as high art with Hotel Café Royal's immersive Van Gogh afternoon tea and the Yayoi Kusama-themed art afternoon tea at the Rosewood Hotel. For something a little more traditional, dress for the occasion and head to The Ritz to dine in the Palm Court or savour treats in the Thames Foyer of The Savoy for scones with lashings of jam and cream, dainty finger sandwiches, trays of pastries and cakes and unlimited pots of tea.

Afternoon tea. Yes, it's twee. But there is something quite fun about working your way through what's essentially dessert tapas, especially when you’re at one of London’s top hotels, restaurants or cafés. Our city’s renowned for putting on some of the world’s best spreads – even better than your mum’s Boxing Day buffet. more

We’ve checked out exactly which afternoon teas are being served again in London and we’ll keep you updated as even more places share info on welcoming back customers. It’s going to be a little bit different: many hotels and restaurants have reduced opening hours and limited places due to social distancing. For any other safety details, check with venues in advance of your visit. But otherwise, go and devour all those miniature treats!
