Locate the rear of the boat's ignition switch. The meter can be positioned anywhere, but it will eventually be wired into the ignition switch. Mounting the hour meter near the ignition switch will facilitate the wiring job later.

Turn the ignition key to "on" or "run." Attach the grounding clip of the test light to a metal stud or framework connected to the boat's electrical grounding system. Touch each of the wire connections on the rear of the ignition switch to see which one is powered. [links]

Connect the hot wire (usually red) on the back of the hour meter to the run wire on the back of the ignition switch, using a Scotch lock wire connector.

Paste a layer of sticky tape, such as duct tape or masking tape, on the dashboard where the meter will be located. This will help prevent the fiberglass or other material to be cut from chipping excessively while the hole is being made. more

Also, how many hours will a 5.0 Mercruiser last? If you do, you should get more than 4-5 years unless you're boating in the saltiest of waters. I have a 5.0 with 775 hours still runs good. As said, you need to keep up with maintenance. Salt or fresh, closed cooling vs raw water cooling make a big difference. here

Inspect the engine for an installed hour meter. The meter can usually be found above the engine or somewhere around the steering area of the boat. The numbers on the meter show how many hours the engine has been in use. If there is no hour meter, one should be installed by a marine mechanic.

That is why I asked for assistance to specifically install the type that I have already acquired.

The previous owner installed this hour meter at the helm. I didn't like it there. So I built this bracket and relocated it back on the engine. here

Went with this type because people were concerned when the kind you recommended failed you lose all your information.

Honestly I hooked mine up to the coil power. so once the ignition is on the hour meter runs. But with audible alarm that is ear piercing with the key on engine off. lets be honest. who in their right mind is going to leave the key on without the engine running. LoL I know not all boats come with the audible alarms. but almost all the Bayliners do.
