See full version: How to Put a New Boat Starter Solenoid in a MerCruiser

You turn the key on the dashboard of your boat and nothing happens. With the key in the “Run” position, the gauges on the dash activate, the audible low oil-pressure warning sounds, but the starter on the engine fails to activate and start the motor. Since the gauges work, chances are the starting battery is charged. Since the starter doesn’t engage and even slowly try to start the motor, chances are the battery isn’t just low on energy. You probably need to replace one of the two starter solenoids present on MerCruiser engines.

To change the main solenoid, the starter motor must first be removed from the main engine, then the wires removed, then the solenoid removed from the starter motor. Reverse the procedure, then reinstall the starter and hook up the battery; the boat’s motor should start. more

Locate the two solenoids on your boat's motor. One (called a slave solenoid) sits on the top of the engine block and is easy to access. This solenoid has two heavy-gauge red wires attached to it and a small-gauge red/yellow wire. The second solenoid is similar to an automotive engine design and sits atop the starter motor. That starter motor is located on the lower port side of the engine (lower right if you are in the boat, facing the stern, looking at the engine). Depending on the boat, deck and engine mounting system, getting at the second solenoid can range from fairly easy to nearly impossible. here

Don - Thanks for the info about the manual. I will download and have a look later.

I'd start by removing, sanding, cleaning, reinstalling,+ Greasing.
ALL of the trim wiring Connections.
Including all the Grounds. more

Head up to the Adults only sticky at the top of the forum, find the service manual link and download manual #14. Then look at section 1C. Complete troubleshooting of the trim system. Depending on what your problem actually is, up, down, trim, tillt, both, the solenoid may or may not fix your problem. here

Bond-o - that was my first plan of attack, I haven't had a boat w. a stern drive in awhile so I thought I'd ask if there is a common fault with the solenoid.

Some solenoids use the mounting bracket as a grounding base so make sure
the contact areas are clean and rust free for a good ground connection.
The best way to buy a solenoid is to EMAIL us with your engine serial number.

There are many different style of solenoids.
Over the years Mercruiser has updated and changed some of the solenoid designs.
Don't be surprised if you get your new solenoid and it looks a little different. more

Make sure you turn off your battery switch before removing your old solenoid.
Take notes as to what wires attach to which terminals. here

Go to our Starter-Alternator-Solenoid Lookup Chart to look up your remote mounted slave solenoid here

You can not buy a solenoid just by it's "looks" and never install an automotive type solenoid
or you could cause an explosion resulting in damage, injury or death.

I went ahead and ordered two solenoids. I figured I would replace them at the same time since I was already in there anyway.

The Problem:
Pressing the button to trim the outdrive up just caused a clicking sound. I would have to press the button a couple dozen times before the outdrive would actually move up. Pressing the button to trim the outdrive down worked just fine.

Remove the four nuts and move the wires aside. [links]

I spent about two hours this morning fixing the trim on my new-to-me Bayliner 175 BR. In the hope that it's useful for someone else, I created a quick write up about how I fixed it.

Boat in question is a Bayliner 175, 2005 model, with the 135hp 3.0l Mercruiser

The issue: In my case, it was carbon build up on the solenoid plate and one of the terminals ÔÇô the carbon build up was so thick, that it was almost impossible to make the connection to the starter motor. Hence, after 10 or 20 cycles of the ignition, the current would slowly work its way through the carbon and finally make a connection. This is a very simple fix by scraping away the carbon to reveal the copper, and putting it back into service. more

Background: From the day I bought it, I'd experienced some issues on a cold start while the boat was moored outside on my pontoon. I'd fire up the bilge blower for a minute or so, turn the key and all I would hear is "click".
