While the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends using a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol, not every form of alcohol-based sanitizer is considered safe. The best hand sanitizers are made with ethanol or isopropanol as the active ingredient, but the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently warned against the use of hand sanitizers made with methanol, a substance often used to create fuel and antifreeze that can be toxic when it’s absorbed through the skin.
