Before Carnival Cruise Line voluntary suspended cruise operations the vessel was sailing out of the Port of Mobile in Alabama. The vessel is set to stop sailing from the port once Carnival Fascination takes over in 2022. That could allow the ship to be disposed of much earlier if needed. more
Carnival Cruise Line has cancelled cruises from the United States through September 30 which follows the announcement by the Cruise Lines International Association late last week that its member lines will suspend cruises from U.S. ports through September 15, 2020. The vessel is listed on Yacht World and currently for sale for $155 million. The ship is also listed right here on the popular Ferry & Cruise Shipbroker site for a higher $200 Million. Carnival Inspiration is 70,367 gross tons and has a guest capacity of over 2,000 at double occupancy. [links]
The cruise company also hinted that even more cruise ships could go to help cruise brands ride out the suspension of sailings and keep the fleet maintained until cruises do eventually resume. When Carnival Corp revealed this information no specific ships were mentioned but recently a number of vessels have started to pop up on vessel brokerage sites. We also know some of the ships such as the Carnival Fantasy have already been open to purchase for sometime before the health crisis hit.
“First of all, a lot of people love those Fantasy-class ships,” pointed out Donald.

For those perhaps not familiar with the ships, they include the Carnival Fantasy (built in 1990), Ecstasy (1991), Sensation (1993), Fascination (1994), Imagination (1995), Inspiration (1996), Elation (1998) and Paradise (1998). This is actually the largest collection of ships, by class, in the fleet.
Carnival said that it now plans to reduce total capacity across its cruise lines by approximately 12 percent versus 2019 levels, adding three more cruise ships to the number of ships to be sold. This increases the disposals to a total of 18 cruise ships, up from the prior level of 15 ships, and an original announcement that 13 ships would be sold during 2020. Noting that all of the cruise ships that would be sold were older, less efficient vessels, Carnival highlighted that those ships had only produced three percent of the corporation’s operating income in 2019. Also being older ships, Carnival noted that their disposal would improve the corporation’s fuel efficiency.
Since announcing its intention to rationalize the cruise ship fleet, Carnival has confirmed the sale of four cruise ships from Holland America Line, two from Costa Cruises, two from Carnival Cruise Line, and one from P&O. In addition, two more ships from Costa Cruises were already sold and due to be delivered to a new Chinese joint venture, and two ships were sold from P&O Australia and due for delivery in 2021 to Cruise and Maritime Voyages. While declining to name specific ships that were being added to the list of disposals, Carnival highlighted that all of them had previously been scheduled to depart the fleet as newer ships were introduced. So far, Carnival said it has delivered eight ships to their buyers. However, they cautioned that there could be no assurances that there would be a viable buyer for the additional ships. In the third quarter of 2020, Carnival is reporting a $937 million non-cash loss on ship sales and impairment charges related to ship sales.

From now until the end of tomorrow, Carnival Cruise Line is offering cruise deals on every cruise ship in their fleet. Each month, they are bringing back more ships into service and they expect to have their entire fleet back in service by the end of the year.

CW Kellock & Co., a ship auctioneer and broker is managing the auction for all five ships. According to the website, sales will be made by tender, which means people submit their bids without seeing anyone else’s bid before the deadline. more
