What you need to remember is that as the length increases, the size and volume of these vessels increases exponentially – as does the cost to build them. Building costs are closely guarded secrets, often the stuff of rumours and supposition. And when you are dealing with highly designed and engineered masterpieces with features that range from snow rooms to submarines, there is no average cost. It was reported that the 482 foot (147 metre) Prince Abdulaziz, number 4 in the list, was built for $184 million in 1984, while Ellison’s (now David Geffen’s) Rising Sun – number 7 in the list at 453 feet (138.01 metres) – is said to have cost over $290 million to build in 2005. As for resale prices, no one knows how much Ambramovich paid for Pelorus when he bought her from her Saudi Arabian owner soon after she was built in 2003, but rumour has it that Geffen parted with at least $300 million when he bought her last year from Ellison.

The top two new entrants have already hit the water in 2012. The largest slots in at number 6 – Yas is 463 feet (141 metres) and has been built in Abu Dhabi on the hull of a former Dutch navy frigate. Meanwhile, the spectacular six-deck Vava II, the largest private motor yacht ever built in the UK, is on her maiden voyage to St Maarten in the Caribbean and entered the Top 100 at number 30. That is indeed true but they all also own vessels that feature in the list of the world’s 100 Largest Yachts – a club that may have one of the most exclusive memberships on the planet. We estimate that it would cost in the region of $10 billion to replace the 100 largest yachts, and moored end to end they would measure nearly 6 miles, which is an awful lot of quayside space.

When we at "Boat International" first produced our Register, back in 1990, superyachting was still in relative infancy. Indeed, to get on the Top 100 list in 1990, your yacht needed to be just 147 feet in length (44.8 metres). Nowadays, your yacht would have to measure at least 240 feet in length (73 metres). That entry point is set to rise again in 2013, with 12 new yachts due to be delivered in the coming months, all of which will make the updated Top 100 list, knocking out a dozen smaller ones, and raising the bar to 246 feet (75 metres). here

Of course, cost is no object for most of these owners, and indeed some of them seem intent on having their own mini arms race. Roman Abramovich, David Geffen and Paul Allen each own two yachts that feature in the top 100 list, with combined lengths of 910.5 feet, 828.4 feet and 717.25 feet respectively– and indeed Abramovich and Allen each own a third superyacht that doesn’t quite make the 100 largest list.

From famous classics like the formerly Onassis-owned Christina O to the futuristic A – which belongs to Russian billionaire Andrey Melnichenko – the top 100 is an eclectic mix of tastes and styles.

Low Taek Jho, known to us Malaysians as Jho Low, already chartered the A+ on at least five different occasions between 2013 and 2014 to locations all around the world, including Nice, Ibiza, the Caribbean, New York and areas surrounding the Brazilian coast. But this filing joins the existing list of Jho’s seized assets, including his own superyacht, Equanimity, and millions of dollars in jewellery and paintings by Van Gogh and Monet. here

However, DOJ’s disclosure also formally links the 1MDB scandal to a top United Arab Emirates official from the purchase of the A+, formerly known as the Topaz. Oceanus Maritime Ltd took possession of the A+ in August 2012 and paid US$688 million (RM2.93 billion) for it. Further investigation revealed that Oceanus Maritime is beneficially owned by an undisclosed UAE public official in a senior leadership role in IPIC. [links]
