Of all the items listed above, it would be wise to start with the gas cap and work your way to the fuel tank, since the gas cap is far and away the easiest and least expensive items to replace on here.

While the trouble code may state that there is a “small leak” in the EVAP system of your Jeep Grand Cherokee, it is actually referring to the amount of pressure lost, and not the physical size of the leak. These leaks can be really small.

The EVAP system captures all fuel vapor from the fuel tank and sends them to the engines intake in order to be ignited in the normal combustion process. When there is a small leak in the Jeep Grand Cherokee’s EVAP system, it will throw the P0456 OBDII Code. If there is a large leak, it’ll throw P0455. more

1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee with recall for the floor shifter. Customer states that the dealer never informed him of a recall on his vehicle for the floor shifter since it was put in place in 2002. The consumer stated there is a clicking noise coming from the steering and the mechanic recommended the clock spring be replaced. The consumer stated the cv joints had to be replaced. The consumer received a second opinion about the cv joints and was told it was related to the viscous coupler being worn which was the real problem. The dealer stated minor driver side valve leak, rear main seal seeping, and rear viscous coupler was worn with noticeable hopping felt in the vehicle. [links]

The evaporative emission control (EVAP) system in your Jeep prevents fuel vapors from escaping into the atmosphere. The fuel vapors from the fuel tank are absorbed and stored by charcoal pellets in the charcoal canister. The vent control valve is controlled by the engine control module (ECM) and allows air to flow into the charcoal canister to purge the gas vapors into the engine air intake to be burned. The flow of the gas vapors from the charcoal canister to the engine air intake is controlled by a purge valve. Both the vent control valve and the purge valve are usually open when the engine is at normal operating temperature. However, the ECM occasionally performs leak tests to ensure the evaporative emission control system is working properly. During the leak test, the ECM closes the vent control valve and purge valve to create a vacuum. If the EVAP system does not maintain the pressure, the ECM recognizes an evaporative emission control leak. In the case of P0456 for your Jeep, it is a small sized leak, smaller than .020” in diameter. more

It is unlikely the driver will notice any symptoms with Jeep check engine light code P0456 other than a slight odor of fuel, decreased fuel economy, and the check engine light. However, as with all check engine lights, it is recommended that you get it fixed as soon as possible so the engine can be running at the proper specifications to prevent further damage. [links]

Many assume that a loose fuel cap is the only problem and do not perform all the tests necessary to diagnose the full EVAP system. Make sure to perform the full range of tests in order to properly diagnose the problem.
