Old gel coats are often porous and may have absorbed years worth of waxes and oils, a condition that reduces the ability of new paint to adhere to the surface. Thorough dewaxing and sanding is needed to make sure that contaminates are removed. This is followed by special primer coats that improve adhesive properties. All surface irregularities must be smoothed out, old holes and scratches filled and carefully faired out. There's nothing like a fresh, glossy coat of new paint to show up surface defects. Unless this work is carefully accomplished, all existing surface defects will be magnified and you will not be happy with the result. [links]

Most boats still use gelcoat for the exterior finish. Gelcoat is basically a resin with very high pigmentation content that gives it it's color. But gelcoat is used for another reason, and that is as a mold release agent that helps prevent the fiberglass part from bonding to the mold at the time it is laid up. Painting over caulked joints results in an unsightly mess. Caulking is soft and the paint is hard; therefore the paint will crack and begin flaking away wherever it is laid over caulking. For this reason, all caulking must be stripped off prior to painting, and recaulked afterwards.

This is some tough paint. It will go over rust and give you long lasting protection. This was my first time to purchase AgriGuard. I would definitely purchase it again. Beware do not get on you clothes or body. It will not come off. I don’t care what you use once it dries it’s on too stay. [links]

If gel coat is put directly into a spray gun, it will create a thick, tacky and textured surface, and may clog the spray gun. Improperly thinned gel coat is a major cause of excessive orange peel. Gel coat can be thinned with a mixture of styrene and acetone, although no more than 10 per cent acetone should be added, as it will dull the finished coating. Other additives are also appropriate for thinning gel coat. here
