Carburetors are relatively simple devices. Their primary function is to deliver the right amount of fuel/air mixture at a given throttle opening (as selected by the rider). However, as with all mechanical devices, carburetors require periodic tuning and service, and will eventually wear out. Before attempting to fix a carburetor problem on your motorcycle, you need to come up with the correct diagnosis.
Carburetor problems generally fall into three areas: too lean a mixture, too rich a mixture, or an incorrect adjustment. Luckily there are telltale symptoms that will tell you which problem you're dealing with.
When a vehicle is running rich, the fuel-to-air ratio is off because the carburetor is delivering too much gasoline. Typical symptoms of a rich mixture are:

Ok, I have come to the conclusion that the mercury tech looked at my motor is wrong. The carb is sucking air, and when i put my hand over it it blows gas back out. The butterfly valve is opening. The motor is running like crap though, and I can tell by the plugs that it is the top cylinder that isn't combusting like it should, but the top plug is wet with gas so I have no idea whats going on. My cheap spark plug tester indicates spark. Any other troubleshooting tips? more
Pull the plug and look into the hole.
If you're new at this, a digital camera is priceless. Take detailed pictures of everything as you take it apart, then use it as reference for reassembly.
Is the throttle valve (butterfly) opening for sure?
A lean running motorcycle will be made known by a sluggish performance, the exhaust pipes running hotter than normal that may turn blue, and if the spark plugs wear out faster than normal. This is because the excessive air is making the mixture burn much hotter than it should.
I suggest doing a thorough clean by taking the carburetor off to clean it, but it’s also possible to clean it without removing it (see my article here to learn how to do that). To learn more about why your motorcycle may not be starting, see my other article by clicking here. here
Luckily there are several ways to fix a motorcycle running rich. Such ways may include adjusting the air/fuel screw, fixing a sticking needle, fixing stuck open floats, and fixing sticking butterfly valves (all of which are a part of the carburetor).
