Fast forward two weeks. I return home and notice that my back flow (copper pipe) leaked a tremendous amount and my PSI gauge read 0.00. Called my service provider and was not able to get a clear answer.
JStar, that you very much for the reply. May I ask you to briefly explain what " closing thee water feed valve to the boiler upstream of the BFP means"?
Just thought Id check back to see if you'd be kind enough to elaborate a bit further as to how one closes the water feed upstream of the BFP.
I have a 5 year old Weil McClain oil boiler in my home in my new home in New England. During the winter I travel for work- some times 2-3 weeks at a time.
I have a burnham v84 oil boiler for baseboard heating and hot water. I understand there is no perfect solution but I would like to minimize the potential damage if a pipe were to burst/leak while away if possible. I was curious if I could turn off the main water supply to the house but keep the boiler on. Obvioubly no one would be using the sink/shower/toilet and I will flush the toilets and open up the sinks to let any remaining water out before heading out. I would be leaving the thermostats set to roughly 50-55F so its possible baseboard heating could come on. Is that ok?
Yes you're right, I can use the Wi-Fi thermostat to tell me the temperature of the house. But that is only good for AC so I wouldn't have any control over the Heat while away. [links]
I don't have a low water cutoff so that's something I would have to look into. A freeze alarm is another option but right now I don't have one and we are leaving tomorrow. I have never noticed any leaks in the system. more
We sometimes hear of people turning off their water supply before leaving the home empty for a few weeks in winter. Their reason is that they wouldn’t want to come home to a burst water main caused by frozen pipes.
Your stop cock is usually found underneath your kitchen sink, and is a tap or valve. Because they are rarely turned off, they can sometimes be hard work, but you or a strong neighbour should be able to do it. Note that if you’ve changed the location or arrangement of your kitchen, the stop cock could be somewhere else completely – now’s a good time to find it so you know where it is in future. If you can’t find your stop cock, there should be another valve outside, possibly outside your property’s boundary. You’ll probably need to contact your local water authority to turn it off, partly because it might be shared with neighbours’ supply, and partly because you might need a special key to lift the cover.
Unless you turn on a hot tap, the system will carry on running as if nothing has happened. Turning on a tap will either have no effect or the boiler will shut down. All things considered, the risk of damage is extremely small.
It can be a sensible safety measure to isolate the mains water before going away in winter, although remember that if the pipes freeze and burst before the stop cock, it will still start to pour out once it thaws. That may or may not be inside your home.
People often worry that turning off their water supply will adversely affect their boiler. The worry is usually caused by a fear of overheating, like boiling a kettle with no water in it, but in reality, it’s unlikely to cause any damage or risk. We’ll have a look at running your boiler without a water supply here, so if you’re worried, read on.
System and heat only boilers will continue to heat up the radiators, and you might even get a bit of hot water out of the cylinder, but that will dry up pretty quickly when there’s no pressure or new water entering the system.
Because of the water being supplied directly in case of a combi boiler, closing the main stop valve would shut the water off for you.
The boilers are designed to operate using the water directly from the main supply that results in stronger water pressure and ensures that you would never be lacking on hot water again. The modern highly efficient units come, being a stainless steel condensing boiler with an inbuilt heat exchanger that operates in order to serve the customers with hot water immediately.
How to turn off hot water supply combi boiler?
Now that you know about how a combi boiler works, you might me wondering about how to turn off hot water supply combi boiler.
The combination boilers are designed to be an all in one unit which produces hot water for taps and central heating in order to cut down the use of storage tanks or cylinders, thus occupying the least space required to house the boiler. The Combi boilers are one of the most popular choices for keeping homes warm in winters.
A combi boiler will usually require to pause from heating the central heating water for your radiators while it’s heating the hot water for your tap, because they are often not build to supply enough heat to both the points at the same time. For this reason, you might hear your boiler switching on and off when you run a hot water tap even if they’re already lit to power the central heating.
