1976 Willard 30-8T Cutter Looking for a solid, comfortable, offshore capable boat that won’t break the bank? This sweet sailing, Crealock designed “World Cruiser” is one to check out - quick!Willard Marine founded in 1957, built only 30 of these Hale Field & Bill Crealock designed, World Cruisers. Willard hired sailboat designer William Crealock to improve on the Westsail 32, using the successful, symmetrical Vega 30 hull mold. This is one of those rare, well built, "8-ton Cutters". She is heavily built, very capable, and has had many major upgrades & updates. She is roomy enough inside to cruise with 4 people, but is easily single handed. The rig’s been replaced (2006/8), and the engine upgraded to the 40hp Yanmar 3j4HF in 2009. There’s a below decks Raymarine ST6002 Autopilot, new Blue Seas panel, Lewmar windlass, and propane heat. Spindrift is a “well-mannered lady”, and backs up better than many newer designs. She has had a recently haul-out and bottom paint, and is offered at well below insured value. Advance arrangements are necessary for all showings. Please call or email in advance. Thanks! more

In addition to Tracy Chapman, another entertainer joined us on the Bermuda adventure. The Jabsco head motor was ridiculously noisy, eliminating any pretense at privacy and decorum. It literally screamed when one of us pushed the button, and the sound of its grinding cacophony instantly brought to mind George Carlin. The voice of that caustic comic matched the timing and noise level of this grinding clamor: here

Due to the small galley and camping mindset of the two-person crew, meals consisted mostly of cereal and sandwiches, although the diesel stove made coffee and tea at times, and Steve occasionally made toast. Given the motion and living space aboard the small boat, neither of us had much interest in cooking or eating anything involving more than two ingredients.

Steve dipped the tank and reported that we had used 40 gallons in 48 hours, traveling some 288 nm. Not bad for a pint-sized passagemaker! more

Following our now daily ritual of checking fuel and engine at 8:45 a.m., Steve once again dipped the tank, more for something to do rather than necessity, with the FloScan keeping us accurately informed. We continued to use just 20 gallons per day, consuming 60 gallons to make 440 miles. We also found more water and sludge in the Racor, so we carefully drained the contaminants without shutting down. The stuffing box was warm, but so was the seawater, still over 80 degrees. [links]

Approaching midnight, as we made the turn to starboard to line up Town Cut and its range lights, we suddenly heard loud thuds all around the boat. For some strange reason we were under attack by large flying fish. They slammed into the hull at speed, bouncing off with a bang or flopping onto a side deck near the open helm door. I tossed several slimy creatures back into the dark water. It was a funny incident that relieved some of the stress that had built up as we pushed to make Bermuda at night ahead of a storm.

Bill Tighe of Willard Boat Works built a 40 foot custom trawler for himself and his wife, Renee.  It was named the "Renee Tighe" and Bill called it "a trawler with auxiliary sail power". here

The trawler in the photo above has tremendous room below because of the vertical sides of its hull and the large deckhouse. It might be a bit tough to handle maneuvering around a marina in windy conditions, but would be a comfortable liveaboard, especially in a marina.

One of the most popular trawlers, and one that seems to hold its value very well, is the Grand Banks. more

Several manufacturers have created trawler type boats referred to as tugs.  Not only are the attractive and rugged looking, they have a lot of room below for their size.  The one in the photo is a 1982 model. [links]
