If you ask us, it’s a no-brainer. Commonly known as the Spanish Virgin Islands, Culebra and Vieques are home to some of the most beautiful beaches, world-class snorkeling and diving spots, and one of Puerto Rico’s world-renowned bioluminescent bays. These are just a few of the reasons why you can’t skip a visit to these sparkling gems of the Isle of Enchantment.
No matter which option you choose to get to one of the islands, there are a few mistakes you want to avoid to make your trip as headache-free as possible. Follow these tips for an easy, fun experience.
Culebra is one of the most popular islands in the Puerto Rico archipelago thanks to its stunning white sand beaches, coral reef, and marine life such as turtles. Travelers often take a day or weekend trip to Culebra to enjoy its unparalleled snorkel and dive sites, like the barrier reefs off Playa Carlos Rosario and Playa Tamarindo. Other popular attractions include Flamenco Beach (one of the most beautiful in the world), Luis Peña Channel Natural Reserve, and Culebra National Wildlife Refuge.
The gate for the elderly people is a different one from the gate that the residents and tourists use. Please, be kind and let the Culebra residents go first, they have to take this ferry again and again. more
By the way, before I forget, these ferries are air conditioned. I have seen so many times people with very light clothing feeling cold inside the ferry. If you are accustomed to lower temperatures you won’t have a problem. But if you live on a warmer climate, like me!, this is something you should take into consideration for you to have a more comfortable trip. [links]
Once you have bought your tickets you will be waiting on the ferry terminal for the announcement that it is time to aboard the culebra ferry. These announcements are made in Spanish.
You can get your Culebra ferry tickets at www.viequesferrytickets.com. Voyage between Ceiba and Culebra is about 40 minutes with fast ferries (2019). Most car rental companies in Puerto Rico do not allow their vehicles to be taken on the ferry. It is recommended to park your rental car in Fajardo and rent another in Culebra.
This old style schooner lends a bit of character to your tour of Old San Juan from the waters point of view. The crew were very friendly, professional, full of information, and were very attentive to making sure all aboard were comfortable. The ship was stocked with sodas, water, rum drinks, and beer, which was perfect for the length of this tour (1.5-2hrs). Despite its size, it is a substantial vessel in weight, so any rocking (even on high wind days) due to waves was not pronounced. The seating areas was covered by a shade screen, so even on hot days, it was quite comfortable. We will be doing this again in our next visit to Old San Juan. more
This tour was a great way to end our vacation in PR! The topsail schooner was clean and had comfortable seating, but no back rests.
The children all received plastic swords, handkerchief and eye patches upon arrival.
The staff is knowledgeable and personable! This tour has everything you need for an enjoyable cruise around San Juan. They serve drinks/food to you so you don’t have to move around the boat. (Yes, they have a bathroom onboard, but it’s down in the cabin area). Several choices in beverages and then as we headed back in we were offered tapas; such as beef or veggie slider, veggie or fish empanada, a tray of various meats/cheeses.
