Had low oil alarm go off yesterday, and my 2003 Yamaha 115 2 stroke went into limp mode. Good times with 3-4' caps and 15-20 mph winds from the east. Took us 1.5 hours to limp back to the dock. I tried the trolling motor but the waves kept raising the motor out of the water. I tried using the emergency oil pump on the Yamaha, but didn't understand how to operate it at the time.. ( I know how now ). Also the waves were getting inside the motor with the cowling off, so I didn't spend much time messing with the emergency pump. I noticed the reservoir on the engine is low, below the minimum fill line, so I know the remote pump wasn't working. My boat is equipped with round command link gauges, and the engine trim display isn't working properly. According to the gauge it thinks the Yamaha is fully tilted to up position. Per the manual if the engine is tilted past a 35 degree angle the remote oil pump will not operate. Command link manual states I can re-zero or re-set the gauge by trimming engine all the way down, then re-zero or re-set in the full down position. Over the winter I installed a new remote tank oil pump and verified it working 12v. Do you think my problem is a simple as re-setting trim on the gauges? Does the engine need to be running to test, or can I turn key to on position, and not start?

You can also get a fail safe mode if your engine is overheating. You can check the head temperatures with a laser thermometer to see if both heads are running the same temperature. The thought is that one thermostat will fail before the other.

And has been said, check your fuel pump diaphragm. 90/10 wreaks havoc on anything that's rubber, especially fuel pump diaphragms. How is the fuel filter element under your carbs? Are the fuel lines and the siphon end down in your fuel tank clean? Is your gasoline new or has it been in your tank over the winter? Bad spark plugs can cause rough running, and have you changed them recently? Have you recently changed the lower unit lube, and are the lower unit gears and bearings in good condition?

well, so much for being a hero you shot my theory down. are there any alarms sounding or lights on whatever gauges you may have?
Yes it should run normal until it overheats. Do you have a manual? If so see if your motor has a oil pressure switch.

I don't have the manual,(I tried to find that on line and didn't get far either) and no alarms are going, seams like a false read on a sensor which is why I'm hoping somebody knows a trick before the long weekend. Does anyone know If there is a temp bypass? I could run it for a while and watch the gauges for heat then I would know there was probably a clogged line after the impeller or something. I did some searching online, and if its something major then I'll wait for the pros but if its something simple then I can take the kids and grandkids in the bay tomorrow.

Hello I have a 2011 115hp 2 stroke saltwater series outboard and my oil alarm keeps going off and lowering the engine RPM too 2000RPM,I think this is limp mode.

The alarm is sounding even though both oil reservoir's are full, when the alarm sounds I get all 3 bars flashing on my gauge (digital type) indicating that engine oil tank is empty but its full.

I have measured the upper and lower resistance of the sensor in the engine oil tank and it is switching and when I empty the engine oil tank it will fill automatically from the remote tank and stop filling at the upper limit.
