I checked with the yammie performance bulletins, and I figured that my engine should do about 2 gallons per hour on 1500rpm. So I definitely use a significant amount of fuel more that what is normal. I'm gonna check with my mechanic tomorrow. Hopefully it is something with the fuel delivery or thermostat. Because if the engine is really that thirsty I'm gonna have to swap it. The fuel prices are just too high over here at 8 dollar per gallon.

However this amount of fuel consumption at these low cruising speeds 1500RPM doesn't sound normal to me.

Hopefully this can help, because a wonderfull day on cruising ended in a bit of dissapointment, because of the fuel usage. more

Today I took my new boat out for a spin! The engine runs like a charm, but it uses lots and lots of fuel! I was only cruising at 1500Rpm and it did almost 3 gallons an hour!!
I also noticed that the engine smells really rich of gasoline fumes coming out of the exhaust. As my previous outboard was a 20HP 2-stroke I'm familiar with two strokes, but I'm not familiar with large 2-strokes.

I had a 115 2 stroke Yamaha for a few years and they do like their gas! The rule of thumb is a WOT fuel consumption of about 10% of the rated horsepower, in your case about 11 gallons per hour. Go to: Yamaha Outboard Performance Bulletins and plug in your boat/motor combination for a chart showing GPH, MPG, MPH at each RPM. Also if you have a bad fuel pump diaphragm it can suck fuel directly into that cylinder causing high consumption and maybe fuel-wet spark plug on that cylinder. Check it out! Good Luck!

Fuel-monitoring systems, like the Eco-Screen feature on Mercury SmartCraft, monitor engine rpm, speed, fuel consumption and trim level to calculate for the maximum fuel efficiency. Yamaha has a similar system in its CL7 touchscreen display that monitors and displays fuel flow, economy and miles per gallon Four-Stroke Diet. I bought a 2020 H22Bay with a 175 SHO from Bent Marine in Metarie, LA. I like the capability of being able to put a 22ft boat in very shallow water chasing redfish and having the confidence to make it back with no problems even if conditions worsen in the bay. I'm tentatively looking for another outboard engine for my 19' Sport Cruiser. I have a great 2002 2-stroke 115 V4 Yamaha and have but two issues: Firstly is the fuel cost; although not huge, I'd like to look at a four stroke as they seem to offer better economy by as much as 30% - quite a saving, if true Re: Problem with Yamaha 115 Saltwater Series (2 stroke) Same problem with mine. 3 mechanics until the carbies were completely cleaned. I have not change mechanics since and the motor purrs. At the very least get the mechanic to clean both and eliminate this as the problem and as a bi-product get better starting and fuel consumption The Yamaha F115 Four-Stroke Outboard Engine. The Yamaha F115 is a 1832cc in-line-four with EFI, a 35 amp alternator, optional Command Link with variable trolling speed control (which allows for 50 rpm adjustments to dial in trolling speeds), and is available in 20- and 25-inch shaft lengths. It weighs 377 pounds, and received a do-over in 2014. Fuel consumption will be decreased at cruising speeds. Also remember that engines with electronically-managed fuel injection and direct injection will yield higher fuel efficiency . To apply these formulas to your boat, just plug in its horsepower rating and multiply it by the specific fuel consumption average, then divide the product by the. Purchased my boat this year with a 115 yamaha four stroke. After 25 hours, noticed an oil leak. Turns out the casting was faulty and I need a new block. Yamaha has told me that Yamaha will not replace motor but will replace the block; but, get this, I have to wait until late September before replacement block is available. I had a late model 06 engine fitted to a yalta craft 555 hc (6m LOA), was a solid engine never let me down, as for fuel consumption at 4000 rpm I was using 7.4 gallons an hour (27 liters) -32 Liters at a speed of 42.1ks. more

I had a 2001 model on a 6m quinny, for 3 years. I found the motor to be very thirsty, eg I would allow 1 litre per 1 km. Didn't always use that much, but on one very rough run from Urangan to Kingfisher Bay (punching into 25-30kn of se on a rising tide) we chewed 60l to cover 20km. A normal day offshore would see consumption around 0.8l/km.

I just had a look at the 100hp yam 4st which when fitted to the 5.4 signature gets almost identical numbers as my old smoky 90hp yam on a 6.2 overall CC tinny with 2 blokes and offshore trim, actually up until 5500 it is almost exactly (mine are a little better) my boat/engine in fuel and speed/rpm.
So point is if you are pitting a 4 st against this engine then it is usually best to try and pit it against one that will return apples to apples, most when doing their sums only take note of the hp sticker and do not parallel final performance, find the HP in a 4st that can do same, then relate fuel use.

For larger boats, I think it is a no brainer -- go with the 4-stroke. My buddy just repowered an older Grady White with a 225 Suzuki 4-stroke replacing a very old Johnson 2-stroke. Holy @#$%# what a difference in gas mileage. I mean phenominal !! [links]

The Yamaha website (using side by side comparsions) claims the 150 2-stroke matches the 4-stroke at 4000 RPMS, my cruising speed. Anyone out there have experience with newer 150 2-stroke & 4 stroke? Do they really compare at 4000 RPM? I do realize at lower RPMS the 4 stroke gets twice as much effeciency. [links]

Of course all my other buddy's think I should get the 4-stroke. They of course are not mechanics and simply belief less noise, less gas, more better .
