Yamaha has done its best to make the new motor an easy-starter, with an automatic decompression feature and a light-load manual starter with minimal end-play that makes the most of every pull. A new, larger handle is also easy to grip. Yamaha also fits these motors with its Prime Start feature (also used in the past on some Mercury motors built as a joint venture with Yamaha), an automatic enrichment circuit that replaces a choke. Prime Start delivers a richer mixture on cold starts and then gradually leans itself out as the motor warms up. here

Both the Yamaha F15C and the F20 are offered with 15- or 20-inch shafts, in manual or electric start, with remote or tiller steering, and manual tilt or power trim. Pricing for the F15C starts at $3,030, and the F20 starts at $3,410, with a standard three-year warranty.

To protect the engine from our suspect navigational skills, Yamaha has designed a new feature called the "waist driveshaft." The new Yamaha shaft is machined down to a smaller diameter in its middle section (the "waist") so it can temporarily twist — but not break — if the propeller makes a hard impact with the bottom. This isolates the expensive crankshaft and gears from this shock, and acts as a second layer of protection beyond the rubber hub of the propeller. [links]

These new motors have two "function over form" features that make them user-friendly. The first is a large, external latch on the back of the cowl that's simply less fussy to use than an internal latch, especially if you are on the water and need to reach over the transom to remove the cowl. I also like the flush fitting, which is attached to a hose on the starboard side of the motor, so you can reach it easily from any direction, in any situation. [links]

New Yamaha T25

Yamaha has recently introduced two new outboards to its line-up: the T25 high-thrust model, and the F20 portable outboard.

Key competitors in the 20-horsepower class include the Mercury FourStroke 20 and the Suzuki DF20, both of which are also equipped with an EFI system that does not require a battery. Both also weigh less than the 126-pound Yamaha F20—the Mercury is 99 pounds and the Suzuki is 97 pounds (all weights are for the lightest available model), or about 25 percent lighter than the Yamaha, a significant difference on a small boat, or if you really need the motor to be portable. The Yamaha advantage is displacement, with 432cc compared to 333cc for the Merc and 327cc for the Suzuki. I would expect the Yamaha to offer more low-end power to move a heavily loaded boat on plane. more

In Yamaha nomenclature “T” stands for thrust and indicates a High Thrust model equipped with a Yamaha Dual Thrust propeller. The new T25 is simply an F25 equipped with this larger-diameter, lower-pitch aluminum propeller that offers generous blade area, just what you need for pushing a heavy load. The Dual Thrust propeller is also designed to re-route exhaust in the direction of the thrust so that the prop is not operating in exhaust gas in reverse gear. This gives the prop much better bite when backing down, and better control when maneuvering in reverse. The T25 with a 20-inch shaft comes with a 10.625 x 8.25-inch Dual Thrust prop that’s a good match for pontoon and lighter boats. The 25-inch version has a 10.625 x 6.75-inch Dual Thrust prop intended for very large kicker applications, such as northwest heavy-gauge aluminum boats or a heavy sailboat. For comparison, the F25 model comes with a 9.875 x 11.25 prop. [links]

Re: Honda/Yamaha 4 stroke 15 versus 20 HP [links]

I originally was set on the Yamaha 20 HP 4 stroke but I have kept an open mind and have also explored the Honda 20 4 stroke. They're both fairly comparable in features. Theres not much difference between the two other than the Yamaha weighs slightly more, and has slighty (ever so slightly) more displacement. They both have very simlar bores versus strokes, and they're both fairly quiet I'm told. The Honda comes with a 4 blade prop, the Yamaha a 3 blade. The Honda 15/20 horse 4 strokes and their platform have been out since 2003 I believe, where as the Yamaha 15/20 have been out since 2007. more

Buy the one that'll make you happy, and not make you sorry that you nickled and dimed yourself into buying the cheaper one.

Keeping an open mind I checked out a local Honda centre and talked with their Marine salesmen. He said he had 15's in stock but could get 20's in 3 days, and he didn't say this in a rush so I have reason to believe he was being honest with me. But what he said was that the 15's and the 20's only differ by the Computer/ignition. If you look at all the spec's, they are exactly the same - same weigh, same engine block, parts, cowl, you name it these engines (like the Yamaha 15/20's) are exactly the same. The spec's show the Honda 15 making 15 HP @ 5000 RPM's where as the 20 makes 20 HP @ 5500 RPM's. But he says one thing they don't tell you is that the Honda 15 HP actually makes 19 HP @ 5500 RPM's. And again I want to emphasize he isn't in a rush type of tone and he was very non chalant and seemed or appeared honest with me. The price difference is about $500 according to the prices he quoted me.

If the $500. makes a real difference to your budget, buy the 15. If it doesn't, buy the 20. Take it from an old cheapskate- whether it be cars, boats or stereos, I've never heard anyone complain later that they wished they'd bought less power. here

Perhaps the best Evinrude outboard from a whole line of impressive motors, the 300 horsepower option is made for people who live big and fast. This V6 weighs in at 558 pounds, and every ounce of it is fine-tuned to create power. The eye-catching shell is made from lightweight material– this beast is all lean muscle. For reference, this outboard can have a 25-foot bay boat planing in just over five seconds, and you can hit 30 mph in under seven seconds. Take it all the way up to 5500 RPM, and you can reach speeds of over 50 mph. [links]

The 407-pound four-stroke is light and compact for the amount of thrust it generates with its 1.74-liter design. Each intake runner has a separate throttle valve, and you’ll notice great acceleration thanks to the computerized multiport fuel injection system. State of the art technology is a perfect complement to classic craftsmanship. more

If you want the best small outboard for a kayak or canoe, look no further than the Torqeedo Ultralight. This electric engine runs on battery power and includes great features like onboard computer integration. The ability to use GPS with ease will help once you increase your range with this little feat of engineering. It mounts easily, doesn’t interfere with normal paddling, and helps maneuver safely when you’re tired or in tight quarters. The eco-friendly performance is a great perk too!

This convenient Mercury outboard with Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI) is a prime example of how Mercury remains committed to excellence at any size. Most manufacturers don’t even offer EFI at the 25-horsepower rating! This may be the best option on the market for boaters who want a superior small outboard that’s bursting with great technology. A relatively small powerhead helps keep this motor light, compact, and quiet. It starts quickly and easily, and the intake noise is almost inaudible at trolling speeds. It’s absolutely perfect for small boats, especially if you plan to do a lot of fishing. here
