Outboard Spares Response
Hi, This could be a number of issues such as faulty fuel pump, carburetors needing cleaning, ignition issue, etc. I think running 25:1 will not be the issue with this engine. here

100:1 - Mix 50ml of oil per 5ltrs of fuel. Recommended by Yamaha and Suzuki for most of their small two stroke engines up to about 30hp, this ratio requires the least amount of TCW3 two stroke oil. The result of using this ratio (less oil) is reduced spark plug fouling and less smoke. For older Suzuki outboards, pre-1997, I'd recommend running 50:1 as the information I've provided about is for current model two strokes.
Note: For commercial applications Suzuki recommends 50:1.
Are you able to use the same oil as for aircooled engines such as chainsaws etc [links]
50:1 - Mix 100ml of oil per 5ltrs of fuel. Recommended by Mercury, Mariner, Tohatsu, Johnson and Evinrude this is my preferred ratio for all outboards including Yamaha and Suzuki. You can confidently use this ratio for any horse power and just about all year models. Whilst this ratio might see spark plugs fouling with extended use at lower RPM (such as trolling), in my opinion, it provides the best amount of lubrication for your outboard.

Hmmm. Good question. Outboard oils are designed for water-cooled engines. I would not suggest it. Cheers
1 1/2 turns out is correct for my C40, but not what the 50 specs say in my manual, but it is not for a 2003.
It should be close though (1 5/8 +-1/4 or 1 3/8 +-1/4 depending on model)
The problem is whenever I go to tune it at home out of the water on the muffs it will idle perfectly all day with little to no smoke and it will give a nice burst of smoke from the exhaust when you give it a short sharp rev then the smoke clears quickly which makes me think it is right. Hence the confusion. [links]
I found my C40 had a problem with that and had to replace CDI to correct idle timing
I am running 50:1 mix of yamilube 2 stroke oil with 95 octane fuel, always fresh. here
Here is the end result
I checked the plugs and cylinder 2 was very wet, the other 2 were ok. Upon further investigation, the idle mixture screw on the second carb was nearly a whole turn further out than the other 2 cylinders! So much for set right! No wonder one cylinder was missing.
Seagulls from IIRC 1968 , can be coverted to run a 25 :1 with a change of metering needle or jets depending on the carb. Before 1968 they had different ( smaller ) main bearings which makes then unsuitable .
Towards the end of their reign some models were supposed to heve been suitable for 50:1 . I don,t think any survived that .
The only two downers . the flying rope that could inflict serious on others in dinghy . so I used to tell them to look away and head DOWN !! Second was the fuel valve !! [links]
I guess I should have said most, not all
50:1 is the safe mix for all premix 2 stroke outboards since the mid 1960s. Before then they usually used an oiler mix here
Many outboards changed from 50-1 to 100-1 in answer to Green lobbying . but it was a move that not long after manufacturers reverted to 50-1.
Honest . 50-1 - you will not regret it.
