Rodbolt, my power head is original but the parts house I've been using doesnt list the old one piece gasket any more. Time to look at another vendor. Thanks for the tech bulletin info, I'll run those down too.

Sailfish, here is the instructions from my manual. Also note it is .5mm and not .05mm. or it is .02in. here

Andy, good points here also and will do the oil level test and like the final checking point to run motor at idle and set like you mention. here

And, if you do as Andy mentioned and find oil leaking from the reservoir, make sure your motor isn't tilted up to far and it leaking out of the cap. Then start looking at the check valves cause the only other place it can go is into the cylinders. here

Ok, so I was adjusting to .5mm with link rod connected. Would unclip on upper part of link which seemed easier, but it does not allow a more finite adjustment I suspect. The plastic joint seemed pretty tight and was afraid to break it. I guess need to apply a bit more pressure and find something that will get behind and help pop it off.
So if I get this right, disconnect oil rod, put cam in fully closed position (counter clockwise), adjust to align with pin. Then reconnect throttle cable and should see a small gap there so it has some oil at idle.
Then full throttle should allow cam to reach other stop pin (clockwise) for full oil when at wide open throttle.

If you are seeing visible smoke with a HPDI, outside of cold start, something is amiss. Usually they burn very clean when running correctly.

I only ran the engine one more time since then and that was in order to fog the engine. I am not sure that the leak is fixed. When I fogged the engine, I did see what looked like oil pouring out of the carb intakes. I could not tell if it was from the fogging oil or if it was engine oil.

I took it to a yamaha trained tech and he replaced the oil pump. I picked it up after that service and saw oil in the bottom of the engine again, so I did not even run the boat, just dropped it back off. They insist there is no leak. more

I noticed the first leak when I got to the boat slip and saw there was oil draining out of the cowling and down the shaft. The motor was stored tilted so when I lowered it, the oil seemed to pour out of the manifold cover and into the bottom of the engine compartment. I thought that the drain hose on the bottom might have come unconnected, so I took off the manifold cover and tightened this hose. [links]

I also noticed that there is a tilt/sensor/sending unit in the engine oil reservior. I am wondering if this unit could have gone bad. It seems to match the symptoms more than the oil pump. here

If the diaphragm is leaking, it can flood / run rich the cylinder the vacuum / pulse it's pulling from.

Unless the oil pump has been removed there is no reason to bleed it. more

On the three US models posted (for parts on this site), all have a separate fuel pump.
