A temperature gauge operates by sending a low amperage current through the gauges's meter to ground via a sending unit with variable resistance. The resistance of the sending units increase or decrease with the changes in pressure, temperature, ect.
As the sender's resistance varies, the amount of current allowed to flow through it to ground changes and the meter deflects, showing the temperature. more

Update August 2020; Boat has been in storage for 3 years. When she was put away, the engines were fogged and properly winterized. A buyer will need to hire his own mechanic to commission and check the engines out. Per the seller, the engines were replaced in 2000 with 350 Crusader long blocks. They have been tuned up regularly. The seller says she is a great sea boat and that he would not hesitate to go anywhere in her. Stock #055349 Seller is highly motivated and wants the boat sold "as is". All reasonable offers considered April 2019 update. the Seller wants this boat sold and has reduced the price to reflect an "as is" sale. Act now, she won't last long at this price!! The Hatteras 31 Flybridge enjoys a loyal following thanks to her solid construction and the quality touches one expects in a Hatteras product. The hull has a wide 12-foot beam and an aggressive 18 degrees of transom dead rise. The hull sides are balsa cored from the waterline up, and the well-flared bow of the Hatteras 31 helps keep the decks dry when seas pick up. The cockpit is huge for a boat this size, and engine boxes provide a convenient seating perch for watching the baits. Below, the step-down cabin includes a forward V-berth, convertible dinette, stand-up head with shower, and a full- service galley with sink, refrigerator, and stove. A bow pulpit was standard. Large cabin sleeps six. Galley, electric head, shower. Marine sound system with disk player. One hundred gal. fresh water, with water heater. Here is the installation on my 75 HP Merc.
I was wondering if I could hook up a Temperature guage to my boat?. I have a 20' pontoon boat with a 2002 60hp. 2 stroke mercury bigfoot. Can anyone tell me if theres a spot on the engine to screw in a sending unit? The # on the motor is OT437387.
It doesn't matter if there is a water jacket port or not. Two types of sending units are available. One is a contact type (actually a cylinder head temp style sender, and the other is a threaded style that screws into the water jacket. My 75 HP has a port but off-hand I don't know if the 60 does. Here are examples of both types.
If you are buying a gauge, make sure you get one that reads 60 on the low end of the scale. Outboards run cool so a gauge that reads 100 or 120 on the low end will hardly ever move. Some gauges are also calibrate C - N - H (cold, normal, hot) which is really not much use as you still have no idea what the actual temp is. 60 degree gauges are getting hard to come buy. [links]
