Got a friend that has a big 2 stroke on his Bass boat. He claims that Amsoil 2 stroke is the secret to no smoke or smell. I know its more expensive than some alternatives. You might look for synthetic brands that say low or no smoke and give them a try. more

Without smelling it, not sure how unpleasant I'd find it. 2 stroke smoke with quality oil smells like fun to me. Sort of associative conditioning, I guess. I hate diesel smoke, but my son likes it, because it smells like locomotives. Each to his own.

I always found the odor of 2 stroke oil pleasant, reminiscent of sweaty days in a tin boat on some sweltering creek, so to each his own. more

IMHO, Yamalube is not necessary, but I'd avoid the real cheap stuff, and of course TCW3. Check the lower unit oil occasionally; change it annually. Check the separator/filter occasionally for crud or water. Nice ride, hope you have a blast with it!

My OX66 is 15 years old:
-Regular Ethanol Fuel
-Pennzoil Extended Life oil
-Chevron Auto Fuel Additive during the season (purchased at Costco. big discount)
-Winter- Stor and Go additive(tank is generally 1/2 or less full. fill up with fresh gas before your spring run) here

fyi chevron "techron" is naptha. good stuff for a two stroke engine, but seafoam is the same thing and considerably cheaper on a volume basis. [links]

I've been long time Amsoil advocate. The price has gone through the roof and is about $28/gal delivered. Been reading a lot of positive things about Pennzoil XLF. It's cheaper and available at Walmart. I'm very conscious of oil because I premix my OX66's. Amsoil has produced the LEAST amount of carbon on the plugs and 02 sensor than any oil I've used. BUT, I don't know if that is a benefit of using Ring Free religiously or not. Which leads me to the following question:

also fix those rigging tubes unless you wanted rusted powerheads

I'm glad I lost the OX66 & went with Hondas! [links]

He can diagnose over the phone.

Most likely VST tank. Do a search on web, grab some carb cleaner and get that screen clean.

OX66 is not HPDI, but still does have the VST tank.

Wow that was a fast reply. I wish i was with my boat right now, I could look at some of that stuff. I am assuming that I have a small air leak somewhere if debris isn't the culprit. Change the fuel pump and check the float bowl gaskets and the bowl itself. Sounds simple enough, Thank you for the advice. I will post as soon as i have something solid to post about.
As for pushing the choke. only when the engine is at idle does the choke smooth out the rough idling, i.e. no wake zones. She shakes a bit until i push the choke, smooths out for a few seconds and begins its rough idle again. Under WOT pushing the choke does drop the rpm. [links]

zip ties are more than adequate, just keep an eye on them at least once a year for sun damage.
very possible you have trash in the carb, doesnt take much.
fuel pumps I reccomend replacing every 3 years as routine maint.
replacing the fuel pumps and rebuilding the carbs on the 150 is a 2 hour project and about an hour and a half on the 115.
if the needle valves are not leaking(flooding the engine) then usually you can get by with just the float chamber gasket as opposed to a very expensive carb kit.
there is not a lot to the V late style carbs.
however ALL circuits supply fuel at higher speeds and the clogging of any or all jets will create a lean condition for that cylinder.
by tapping the choke you forced it rich, bypassing ALL normal carb circuits. the increase in speed indicates a lean condition existed as the air was already there it just needed the extra fuel.
had the air fuel mix in the crankcase been correct the choke would have caused an instant drop in RPM not an increase. [links]

sounds like you have clogged carbs or a bad lift pump or a restriction in the fuel line. pay no attention to buddies that have no knowledge, but keep running it like that and you will beable to post about the cost of pistons while fixing the original problem.
trust me on that.
I maybe have seen 2 or 3 ign coils on V yamahas actually failed in the past 10 years or so. more

If anyone has owned these motors it would be great to hear people's experieces with them.

PM me if you want more info on the motor, as I did a ton of research before I bought my 1997. there is alot of info online on how to do maintenance on the motor.

My 1997, while sun bleached and perhaps a little crusty from previous exterior neglect, runs like a champ. They are torque monsters and sound great when cruising.
