Using the electric starter, check to see if there is compression. here

If the engine turns over slowly, check battery fluid, recharge the battery and ensure that all connections are tight. Try starting the quad again.

Once the ignition is dry, ensure that the spark plug cap is attached and connected to the chassis to ensure proper grounding. Use the electric starter. If the spark is good, then there is no problem with the ignition system. more

If there is no spark, there is a problem with the ignition system, and the 2000 Timberwolf should be taken to a Yamaha dealer for inspection. here

If the engine still turns over slowly, replace the battery.

2) It sputters when at about 1/2 throttle, but runs fine when at 1/4 and full throttle. Has a Mikuni carb on it, I think stock. didn't do much to it besides disconnect the accelerator cable and look inside to see if it had gunk in it or anything. It looked pretty clean inside where I could see. It may need to be adjusted or rebuilt but the smoking is worrying me more at the moment. here

3) Sometimes, it will idle high like the accelerator is stuck. What I mean by that is when I release the throttle it doesn't always return to a low idle, then I stab the throttle and it returns to a regular idle.

A guy near me was hard up for money due to losing his job and said he'd take $100 cash for a Yamaha Timberwolf 2WD he had sitting in his yard so I snagged it. I don't know what year it is, but the plastics are green. Anyway, here's the problems I've found after running it some tonight (After handing him the cash I actually rode it back to my house which was about 5 miles)

1) It smokes a pretty good but (blue smoke) when first cranked, and smokes a little while running but never completely stops smoking. I checked the plug, it had very little buildup on it and was not wet (no oil on it). There are no oil leaks anywhere on the engine either, I've looked it over a million times. here

4) It sometimes is hard to get back and forth from reverse to 1st gear. It will get stuck and takes me a few yanks and rocking the quad back and forth but it will eventually go back to 1st. Is it a sign of transmission problems or maybe just a quirk of the Timberwolf I should get used to?

i put a new carb and pump still wont run unless it is chocked

Freshly overhauled engine. Now it may idle a bit but the quits, will not gain rpm unless choke is applied. Air filter, gas lines and carburetor are all new or cleaned. What else do I need to look at? here

Dwight Coleman there are usually only a few possibilities if it only runs with the choke. One cause could be an air leak on the carb, head gasket, crankshaft seal. The other could be a clogged low speed and idle circuit. Since you just got the engine done I would double check the carburetor. You do want to make sure that it is set right and that it is clean. Check everything properly again and check for airleaks. here

Make sure the timing marks are lined up correctly. The timing mark layout will be different from model to model. Please refer to your service manual. [links]

Electric fuel pumps tend to fail for no apparent reason from time to time. Before they break completely, they may be getting weaker gradually due to wear. more

Alternative method: If you don’t have a spark tester tool, you can do a visual test to check for spark. Please note that this method may cause electric shock if done incorrectly.

Due to the backfire, you know that at least some fuel is getting through. Please refer to step 3 on how to clean the carb. [links]

You need to remove the whole fuel pump assembly to access the filter. more
