When the engine starts it tries to spin the Bendix gear faster than the starter shaft, which forces the gear back down the grooved shaft. You remove power from the starter motor and the spring puts the Bendix gear back to the bottom of the shaft.

The most common cause of this fault, as tashasdaddy explains, is intermittent failure in the high current circuit. . .usually due to corrosion in a connection. The most common connection fault is where the tinned copper end of the battery ground cable is bolted by a steel bolt to the alloy engine block. Terrible dissimilar metals connection which can corrode while very tight and appearing very clean.

Tell us which bike (EG =3aj) and year it is, which may help identify the problem. more

Not lazy fella, told not to even ride the bike whilst awaiting lens operation/ replacement at Moorfields from fear of infection. So working on the bike is not on my list of prioritys at the moment, hence my hanging around on the Hubb so often! I am however looking for a secure lock up close to me, not easy if only for the costs of having one and most don't even offer security. If I can find one it will be so much easier to work on in the evenings.

Keep us posted as to what you find and how you get on, and good luck.

Ok guys, desperate for some help now, replaced the clutch plates, set up the kickstart (again!!) & all seems ok, good compression & kicks over nicely. that was until I put it on the main stand to work on it (not sure why) but tried the kick again, lo & behold nothing!

Anyone know if plates from an XS650 will fit, as can get them easier & cheaper than TX ones? [links]

So, I was wondering if the shaft moved out off the sprocket sometimes, which it obviously shouldn't, meaning it would need shimming. which it surely shouldn't?? Will do some measuring tomorrow! here

Has anyone had the following problem & how was it solved?

turnerny75

My kickstart only engages every now & again so I took off the cover expecting the worst but everything appears to be as it should with all the parts in place as per the manual!

Well everything looks ok, pulled kick start mechanism to check & all looks fine, refitted & aligned as per the manual, refitted cover & it worked. for a while!!
Now I'm wondering if it's the clutch that is the problem as it won't free off (too many years sat in oil no doubt) so will probably need to replace the friction plates.
